Whistle Training?

Pit*Bull*Princess on Behavior - Mon, October 13 2008

Ok, so I was watching "It's Me or the Dog" the other night, and I saw something that seemed liked a really good idea.
The lady, I think her name is Victoria or something, was trying to train this boxer who had some dog aggression problems. So she did this thing where she blew a whistle and gave him a treat. She did this in several different places, so the dog could get used to being in different enviroments with the whistle. So, whenever he started to bark, she blew the whistle and he came, thinking he was going to get a treat, (which he did, it never fails! ;) ).It seemed to work, and I thought about using it for Sugar and her barking.
Have any of you done this before?

Yep, but without the whistle. It works for any fearful situation - if you can catch the animal before they become to anxious.

Yep, I'm whistle trained. When I'm in the yard, barking or sniffing, if I hear Mom's whistle, I come a running. Mom said it's better than yelling AND it works even if I'm chasing a bunny! It's like my rescue recall word (for emergencies) but really really loud (which is good in case I was ever too far from Mom). When I hear the whistle, I come a running.
