Roo used to do that - bark, bark, bark. We used to joke that she had a lot to say and was the Socialite for the neighborhood telling everybody's gossip. My Mom's dogs (Nutmeggers & Rusty) are CONSTANT barkers. She has to talk to me in the bathroom because they are so loud.
The training I was given for Roo was to not "shout" at her because she then thinks you are joining in the fun. Redirect and then reward. I go to Roo when she is barking, tap / redirect her to watch me and, as long as she maintains it & doesn't bark, click / treat.
Granted, she still barks but now she will stop if I approach and look for treats.
Oh - and the prozac helped too.
yep - if I allow Ojo, she'll growl first, then move to a bark. With Roo's issues, we have to curb all barking because Roo can't handle the excitement (poor kid). When they are safely seperated, I tend to allow more barks just to let them remember they are dogs :-)
It's the doggy version of Neighborhood Crime Watch. Remington barks at every moving thing. Then the neighbor's puggles bark, then an unknown dog two streets over and then the three dogs on the corner. My favorite is the Great Dane behind us who has an incredible sense of humor. He'll walk up to the back fence and let out one low and intimidating "woof" and then trot away, hence starting the entire sequence of the crime alert dogs. I can picture him laughing as he trots away. Look at it as a team effort...
I'm lucky because my girls don't bark too much when we're just sitting around the house. Minnie used to be horrible though. My front door has small windows in it. The girls could see out the bottom two rows of windows, and everytime someone or something would go down the street Minnie would just go off! I bought some stuff that is like a big sticker that makes the window look frosted. They can't see out of it now, and she doesn't bark anymore. That stuff has been such a blessing!! They will bark if the dogs outside are barking, but normally, if I tell them to hush or sshhh, they'll be quiet.
Chances are you can HEAR my dogs since we're not too far apart! God bless my neighbors, they love my dogs.
