vomiting-when to go to the vet

Kris on Health - Thu, October 09 2008

Francie has been throwing up about two or three times a week for the past three weeks. She's acting normally but the vomiting part. She's eating, drinking and playing. She vomits mostly in the wee hours of the early morning (between 3-4am).

At what point do I become really concerned and take her to the vet? Any input you can share is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Reno does the same thing. I took her to her vet and they said she has acid reflex. They told me to give her 1 Prilosec everyday for the acid relex and it stopped. Reno is about 50lbs so I don't know what dosage you would give Francie. Hoep this helps some.

If it's been pretty steady for the past few weeks, I'd at least give them a call and see if they have any insight. At the least, they may give you some pills to give her while her tummy gets calm. How's her poo? I feel like a lot of times vomiting and loose poo go hand in hand and if she has loose poo, maybe she has a bug or parasite or something.

Where does Francie sleep? Is there stuff (lotion, shampoo, etc) that she could get into when you guys are asleep?

Francie sleeps glued to my side. There's nothing that she could get into. I make sure of that because Penny is my scavenger/forager. I have to keep things closed up and put away because of her, so there's no way Francie's going to get into stuff.

I'll go ahead and call the vet's office today and see what they say.

Hoover did this and it was acid reflux. It happened in the very early morning and then he was fine during the day. He was taking a Pepcid everyday for a couple of weeks.

If she's acting fine, maybe try this and see if it settles down.

I would take a stool sample into the vet to see if she has a parasite.

Last year Daisy did this and that is when I found out about a parasite. Beside her pills for the parasite, she took Pepicd AC

This is what we were told for the girls too. Terriers have morning tummy -- where they will toss bits of yellow foamy stuff. Basically, pepcid and/or a biscuit first thing in the AM helps. Maybe give her a treat before bed so she has something in her stomach to settle the acid?

I've never known that! Learn something new every day. I hope my new foster terrier puppy doesn't have morning tummy.

Don't know if this would help, but when I have an upset tummy, my mom makes me some white rice and mixes it in with my food. It keeps my poo from getting icky, and helps my tummy ache. But I also agree with the others...Maybe she just has some heartburn!!

I had a similar problem with one of my dogs and I was told to switch her to Chicken and Oatmeal Natural Choice by Nutro dog food and she has not thrown up in several years. It is not as rich as other dog foods and it is easier on their stomachs. I could not believe it actually worked...

Um - Mom said you would find this funny:

The four types of dog vomit

YELLOW URKA-GURKA
Dog runs around the house and hides under furniture while making a prolonged ‘uuuuurka-guuuuurka, uuurka-guurka’ noise. (This noise is the only thing guaranteed to wake up a true dog lover who is hung over from a post dog-show celebration at 3:30 a.m.) After mad scrambling to capture the dog and drag him outside, the episode ends with an inaudible ten yard slimy yellow froth from the living room rug to the back door.

BLAP DISEASE
Dog exercises hard and (a) eats large mouthfuls of snow (winter Blap Disease) or (b) drinks a bucket of water (Summer Blap Disease). Within two minutes of returning inside, the dog spews out large amounts of clear slimy liquid while making a distinctive ‘blap’ sound and a sharp percussive noise as it hits the linoleum.

GARKS
Dog suddenly clears his throat with loud and dramatic ‘gggaark, gggark’ noises generally followed by prolonged ‘iiiksss’ and then loud satisfied smacking noises. There is nothing on the rug. Don’t investigate, you don’t want to know.

RALFS
Apropos of nothing, the dog strolls into the dining room and waits till the innocent dinner guests are all watching him. Then, with a single deep gut wrenching ‘raaaalff’ dislodges the entire weeks’ contents of his stomach on the dining room rug.

Variation: Then he eats it.

In all the above events the dog is entirely healthy and indeed deeply pleased with himself.

Wow. Scouter, Mom read these out loud and even my sis said "they're all true". Mom was laughing so hard her eyes were leaking.

We're going to the vet in a few minutes. Francie threw up three times in the night and then had something akin to dry heaves. I have to admit, I'm worried about my little Francie Pants. I'll let you all know what the vet says.

I'm assuming you are waiting on blood work or something, but did the vet have any insight for you?

No, the vet didn't help. Our regular vet is on medical leave so this is the fillin vet. He thinks the vomiting is from all the drainage Francie has because of allergies. I disagree but I'm not a vet. I took a stool sample in with me, just in case. We'll see how little Francie Pants does tonight.....

I hope she is better tonight. I actually took a stool sample to the vet this week just to ease my mind. Dolly's been getting lots of exercise, but I was worried that she was actually getting worn out and she had vomited a couple of times. Stool samples came out fine. I just didn't think I'd ever be able to wear her out to that degree!
