Adoptable Golden Retriever

Mama Muttblood^..^ on Breeds - Sat, September 27 2008

I may have posted about this several months ago, but the man who has this dog has now actually contacted me himself. This is a couple who have a 3 year old male Golden, intact, that they believe they can't properly exercise and care for in their current situation. I disagree, but what are you going to do; at least they mostly have the dog's best interests at heart . I'm not sure if they have had him since he was a pup, but somehow their house is too small, they don't have a fenced yard, and, although they walk him at least once a day, they think he's not living the life he should, i.e., not enough attention and exercise. He is housebroken and crate trained, gets along with dogs and loves cats, in fact snuggles up with their cat. I told him that they would have to get him neutered before I would become involved in trying to place him, and he winced, saying that he wanted him to "get laid" once before he got snipped. I gave my usual "too many unwanted animals in the world" speech, quoting numbers of killed pets daily at ACC. He said he would get him neutered, and contact me as soon as it was done. He also wants to keep him until "a good home" is found. At least he trusts me to find a good home for the poor dog. I don't think he is lying about his temperament and housebreaking, and I saw a picture of the guy...he looks like a beautiful dog. Before I contact ARPO about possibly taking him, I thought I would rattle the IP bushes to see if anyone is interested first. I'm not sure that GR rescue is very active in Indy, but I will try that if no one else is interested. Thanks.

I know a few families that live out in the country and have been thinking about getting another dog but don't want a puppy. The downside of both these situations is that the new dog would be an outside only dog. Both families have barns for shelter and gravity feeders for food and water. If nothing better comes along I can give them a call.

This ad is on Craigslist. They are looking for an adult Golden. Don't know anything about them but it's worth a try http://indianapolis.craigslist.org/pet/858769073.html

There is a local golden retriever rescue named Grrrace. I rehomed a golden once, and they let me put a courtesy post on their site. I found a good home in a couple weeks. I haven't dealt with them other than that, but they were very nice to me.

I love the "I want him to get laid once" line. You should've told him he doesn't need to get laid; he can lick himself!! :)

As a golden owner, I'd caution against placing a golden in a home that was looking for an 'outside dog'. It's the right fit for a lot of dogs, but not a golden. They are such people dogs and are miserable if they're not at your side!

A family friend lost their golden about a year ago and they have been kicking around the idea of getting another one. The wife just tore her rotator (sp) cuff, so I know they wouldn't be abele to do anything until she's done with ehr rehab/sling but I'll forward this her way.

Golden retrievers are not in any way outside dogs-they are passionate about being inside with their person. An unhappy golden will only develop behavior problems that will make it miserable for dog and person alike, and end up badly. You are doing such a good thing by trying to get this boy out of what sounds like an undesirable situation, but please insist that he be an inside dog.

It's clear that he is a people friendly dog and enjoys being the house with his current family, so I would make sure he was not an outside only dog. Thanks.
