Talk, talk, talk

Scamper-Foster dog on Behavior - Fri, September 12 2008

I love to talk. Yep, I talk about wanting in or wanting out. I talk about eating my food. I talk about people coming and going. I talk so much that mom says I should be hoarse by now. Not barking but talking mind you. Mom's not that familiar with my breed but she thinks it might be due to my American Eskimo blood. She doesn't like me to get so excited with my heartworms but I just can't help it. I gotta talk about everything. I'm a really good dog and really smart. So does anybody have an idea about how to limit my talking? It makes me pant a lot too so mom wants me to curtail the chattiness for awhile anyway. I should be going back soon for my next round of HW shots. I"m not looking forward to that. I'll get two in a 24 hour period. The one hurt bad enough that I certainly don't want two! I'm sure I'll talk about that too☺ Thanks for the help. Mom says she's trying to make me into a great dog before I get adopted. Apparently I'm almost too smart at times-lol.

I had to learn to bark on command and then the quiet command. I'm still not that good at it but I'm a work in progress according to my Mom. If you teach to bark on command, then you can counter barking with quiet / hush command. Good luck Scamper! Training is hard work!

Join the club. Mom has no advice.

Scamper does bark but that's not the problem. He is just very vocal and "talks" a lot. I don't like him to get so excited but I'm not sure how to combat it. He's doing great with NILIF training and Jan Fennell but none of it seems to quiet the talking.

You can try to reward the quiet moments (even if its just when he's taking a breath). Just use the word "yes" when he breaths and give him a treat. You can make this word really powerful if you always give a treat when you say it. Its a clicker technique, but you can always use your voice, or even a finger snap.

ahhh... well, I used to do that too. I'd squeak at anything that made me anxious or nervous. My meds that I'm on now are helping me with that one to stay calm. My trainer did tell Mom to do what Marci said - reward the "quiet" times when I'm doing nothing to help build my confidence that being quiet was an ok state of mind.
