Sad news

Tabitha on Breeds - Thu, September 11 2008

About a year ago, my cousin and his fiance got a puppy known as a blue-ticked beagle from the pet store and ever since he was tiny, he has undergone health problems. However, they just recently found out that his kidneys are in bad shape and the vet predicts that the dog, Tre, will only live to be 3 or 4 years old :( This just makes me so sad, especially because I know how much my cousin reeeeally loves Tre, but also because it just isn't right for people to breed these certain kind of dogs that end up having such bad health. I know a lot of us have heard this a million times, but it just is not a good idea to buy dogs from pet stores, just because a lot of times, the puppies come from unknown places and their wellness is unpredictable. My cousin and his fiance are learning that the hard way. They still intend to do ALL they can to give Tre the most out of life and our whole family hope and pray he beats the odds. He is only about 1 1/2, so it is too soon to tell, but please just keep your fingers crossed for him. Here is a picture of the cutie:

OH, he is so cute. And you are absolutely right that bad genetics is the problem here. Another casualty of the puppy mill pipeline. Thanks to your cousin for doing whatever it takes to keep her boy as healthy as possible.

I'm so sorry. What a cute baby. They should submit their story to PetShopPuppies. I believe they collect stories like this about the dogs with health problems who were bought at a pet store. The more cases they have, the more compelling the facts about pet shops being bad places to buy a pup!

We had a "blue" Beagle turned into Wags that was bought at a pet shop. The blue gene is a dilution and many times they have very sparse coats along with other health problems. However, consumer demand is greatest for these "rare" colors so the PMs continue to breed them. I've seen blind/deaf and even eyeless double dapples Dachshunds that were used for breeding so they could throw the "rare" colors. If only people educated themselves a little on the colors/breeds before wanting these dogs. I'm sorry your cousin is going through this. I agree that they should tell their story to anyone that listen. If you have a dog from a pet shop, you can request info about it on the pet shop puppies website. what a cute little guy!
