Boy am I with you on that. I just went from 50 mpg to 25 mpg due to that LOVELY man who hopefully totalled my Prius. I just doubled my gas expenses. I was in heavy sweaters all last winter. Not sure I can let it get to much colder because of the animals.
I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one freezing my hiney off in my own house last winter. We live in the country and have propane so its not quite as expensive as natural gas, but still outrageous! I finally told my husband we had to warm the house up a little when I woke up one morning and found the dogs in a pile with the furriest on the outside of the pile with their tails over their noses. I felt like a horrible mom when I saw that.....
An Impala gets that bad of gas milage? Would have thought it was better... It's about the same size as my Camry and I get around 30mpg (it's a '97 w/ lots of miles, newer Camrys are a bit better). My old truck got a whopping 13mpg! The gas savings when I switched cars made the payments...
I have a programmable thermostat, so at night it's set to go down to 55F, during the day when I'm not at home its at 60F and when I am home... a blistering 65F! It's amazing how much less the critters shed in the winter. ;)

That's sooo weird....this is EXACTLY what we do too! Same temps and all! We have a programmable thermostat too and its set for 55 at night, 60 during the day while we are at work and 65 when we are home in the evening. I wear flannel PJ pants, a long sleeved t-shirt with a fleecy sweatshirt over it. We cuddle with the animals quite a bit more in the winter:) lol
I feel like such a wuss! Remember that I'm a Virginia girl, where it was rare that temps fell below freezing. Last winter was our first Indiana winter and our thermostat was set at 68 and we were freezing our hineys off! I won't tell you how outrageous our gas bill was...I guess we'll have to get used to ultra thick pjs...has anyone tried sleeping in a skisuit?
I think I actually had mine set above 70 right after I moved in December and before I really thought about! I got that gas bill and about fell over! I usually keep mine between 65 and 68. I have a programmable thermostat now, so I'm not sure what I'll set it at this winter. It gets cold downstairs, and that's where my fosters are so I'm not sure what I'll do yet. I have two fireplaces, so there may be some wood-burning going on this year!!
Never thought I'd say it, but... thank goodness we are total electric! Not cheap, but not gas!
