Stubborn doxie streak

Lola on Behavior - Fri, September 05 2008

Mom here: I need some advice. Miss Lola has begun to freeze when she's at the end of her leash every time I need her to come closer to me. She plants those little paws and will not move. This is particularly annoying on walks when I need her to come just a foot closer with me to pick up someone's poop. I say, "Lola, come" and she flat out refuses. It's almost like she's refusing to backtrack. She normally wears a harness because I'm afraid she's going to slip her collar, which she almost did today.

This morning, when I was headed to the mailbox, she decided that she didn't want to go over there and stood her ground. I did coax her eventually because she's not going to win, I'm the mama! Kirby and Hoover have never done this, so I'm kind of frusterated.

I guess it's time to work on heeling....

**sigh** Pre-teens can be so stubborn.

I've noticed Carter does the same thing when I take him out for the final potty of the night. He'll just sit by the back door and look like he's going to flop over and go to sleep. So, I put the leash back on, keep treats in my pocket, randomly rewarding "come" and other commands. I think he's getting better, but it's only been a couple of days.

T did the same thing and he slipped his collar one day, Little terd. Took off running up the driveway towards the road but luckily he hung a right at the barn gate and went in there since that was where we took our walks to. Hang in there, you'll work her through it.

For all of the "issues" you say I have, this is one that I do NOT have. I love you mom and anywhere you go, I go. My aim is to make you happy. **sticking tongue out at Lola**

I agree with Woo that you probably need to work on the "come" command. Start out by always rewarding her for coming to you, even if you are only a few feet away. After she is reliable, start the intermittent reinforcement. Maddie gets stubborn like that sometimes and it is maddening!

and Mom's two cents is to teach a rescue recall (emergency word that means get your butt over hear NOW!) so if she slips the collar or something, you can always get her back without fault. Mom uses a whistle for me and Ojo. It's LOUD but when I hear it, I turn tail & run like the wind to her. Treats and LOVE are always at the end of that one.

Nigel does the same thing when it's hot out and he doesn't want to walk (although we NEED our long walks to burn off his energy or the house/couch suffer). I've been doing what others suggest. when he plants, i say come and offer a treat, then lots of praise.. usually, that's enough to get him moving and on his way

"Let's get something to eat!!!" was a big hit at our house during the Freckles era. She'd stop whatever she was doing and respond to you, inside or outside the home (worked great when she ran off outside but I felt like an idiot screaming that and running down the street).

Yeah...I can relate, only it was "wanna cookie"???? Very high, shrill, panicky, looking, of course, like an idiot. Now I have a privacy fenced in backyard, or if we take them on a leash, it's on a harness.

Hoover got outof the house once and started running down the street. I was screaming "wanna biscuit? wanna biscuit?" In my excited doggie voice. That and him seeing Kirby out with me made him come back... brain damaged Hoover.
