Getting skinny

Mister Black on Health - Thu, September 04 2008

Is there something that helps a cat gain weight. Mister Black is 13 and is getting pretty darn skinny. I've been thinking about supplementing his diet with canned food. Any thoughts?

I have a Fe-Lion elderly sister that is the same way. Mommy supplements her kibbles with wet cat food. She does not gain weight though. Older cats kidneys often fail them and weight loss is one sign of that. Just give them the best spoiled life you can.

Making sure that Mr. B is on a good quality senior diet is the first step. Older cats can't easily process all the protein in regular cat food. I really hope this doesn't happen to you but my poor Regina started loosing weight then couldn't hold her food down. She was 18 and diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease. If senior food doesn't help put some weight back on please go to a vet asap.

I would definitely have the vet take a look at him, as that is often the first sign of kidney problems, and kidney problems are VERY common in older cats.

Hyperthyroidism is also a possibility as it can cause weight loss in cats, but only a vet can diagnose the problem!

I have hyperthyroidism, and with meds, I've gotten back up to my normal weight/activity for an 11+ yr old cat. I can still put a smack-down on Alvin!

Canned food is working... he get's some in the evening as a snack and it seems to help. He's looking healthier.
