"Operation Kitty Update"

Nancy on My Blog - Wed, August 27 2008

Hi everyone,

A lot has happened since I wrote yesterday's post , so I'll update you on what's going on. The
kittens aren't living with me, but they are living on a balconey in a my dogs' cage with their mama. They are living with another resident in the complex and her boyfriend. They are about 4 weeks old. Mama is still feeding them, but they are also starting to eat kitty food on their own.

The girl who is taking care of them really wants to keep them with mama until they are weaned, which, according to sources, is about when they're eight weeks old. Is that true? A lot of people have responded to my emails from home and school. Some of said if they got one, it would be an "outside" cat. Personally, I would prefer they be "inside cats", but, if we can't get them into rescue, as long as they get a good home, get FIXED, and get their shots, I guess that's better than what the Humane Society was offering them, which was death.

They are good with kids. When they were living on the patio, they were being taken care of by about 6 or 7 kids who lived in the apartments around them. It was very sweet. The kids had given them names, and they asked me if they could keep their names when they went to rescues. They told me they would tell me the name of each kitten, so I could tell the rescue or new owner. They named the mama "Princess".

There are 4 or 5 gray ones (it's hard to count them when there are nine of them moving around!) Some of the gray ones are all gray, some are gray and butterscotch, and some are gray and white (I think, it's hard to remember, there are so many of them!!)
1 Black one
1 Brown-toned one.
2 White ones.

Mama cat needs to resued too. I think she's pretty young, but reallly am no expert. She's very loving. She's gray and butterscotch, too. Right now, she is not very happy in captivity. She's a "lady of the street", if you know what I mean. So, definitely, she will need to be fixed ASAP, and I think/hope someone is working on that with indy feral. I thought ARPO was working on that, but I've called Naomi two nights in a row, and haven't heard from her. Maybe I'll hear from her tonight.

As I said, I am getting some responses from my emails. If I can't get them hooked up with a rescue, I really want them to go to responsible owners who will get them fixed, because we don't need anymore homeless kitties going around having babies on people's patios!!!! Too many "romeo" male cats roaming around (sorry, Sir Denny Crane), taking advantage of these poor lady cats. Hee Hee

Right now, I think we're waiting to hear from the rescue. The "cat angel", Stacy, is working on it!! The best thing for them would be to go into a foster home and get fixed and their shots and get off of the balconey, so that's what we're trying to do. Four weeks is an awful long time for them to live in a cageon a balconey.

I appreciate the awesome response I'm getting from everyone. What a wonderful community IP is!!

8 weeks (and 2 lbs) is generally the accepted age/weight for early spay and neuter for kittens.

Thanks! I think I read that on indy feral's website. How about weaning? Do they need to be with mama for 8 weeks? That's what the girl who's taking care of them thought, but I wasn't sure.

They can be weaned as early as 6wks, but that can lead to some issues such as "wool sucking" where kittens can attempt to nurse/suck on blankets, other kittens, humans, even on themselves.

Most kittens do grow out of that phase, but some don't. My Charlie is an example, he's 11.5yrs old and still tries to suck on my arms. It's annoying, but I've learned to deal with it... though some adopters may be turned off by it.

Thanks, again. I guess the 8 weeks we heard was more accurate then, huh? They're four weeks this weekend, so Angel Stacey will have to put up with for 4 more weeks? Wow, she's a saint, and a Godsend!

That is absolutely amazing, Nancy, that poor young female having all those kittens! I've never seen a litter that big. You are an angel to be taking such good care of them with your neighbors while they get bigger. We just luv ya!!! You're a good good angel. xoxoxo Diane and the Poodles
