walking all 3 dogs at once

Debbie on Behavior - Wed, August 27 2008

I think I finally figured out a way that I can sort of comfortably walk all three monsters at one time. I have this clip thing, like for climbing and repelling (not that I've done that) that I found at Target a couple of years ago. It has a nice cushy handle, too.

Anyway, I found out that if I hook Hoovie and Lola on that clip and walk Kirby on his retractable leash, which I have complete control of, we can ALL go at the same time! Kirby is great at staying beside me so his leash needs to be shorter than my pullers, Hoovie and Lola Loo. I was constantly wrapping up Kirby's leash so he wouldn't trip on it and with using the retractable leash, I don't have to worry about it.

We make quite a sight walking around the block, let me tell you. 3 leashes and poop bags...I'm a mom, shouldn't I have grown another set of arms by now?!?

That's great! I can walk Colton and Maize together because they are both wonderful on a leash. My problem is that I'm not toally sure that I want to be walking 210 pounds of dog at the same time. lol

It is a sight to see 3 dogs walking together. Ah...3 poop bags...3 times the smell.
I'm glad you have a system that works for you.

have you ever tried a coupler? I have one for the girls. It connects to their harnesses and then gives me up to 2 feet before they are joined into one leash. it's nice.. they have some freedoms but one leash for me to control.

I have tried a coupler but Kirby and Hoover are both ding-bats about it and end up fighting because they can't go their own way. Really embarassing...

Of course, today we had to deal with 4 different dogs walking by and Hoover was in some sort of ticky mood and really acted like a goof.

I'm not sure I'll be walking them like that much. I have some serious bursitis in my left hip (I know....getting old) and all of them pulling really irritates it. *sigh* It's one of those days, you know?

I wish I could walk all 3 of my girls at once, but the street I live on has no sidewalks, the street is narrow, and it can be really busy at times......sigh.

with Roo's snarkies, I don't walk them on the coupler much anymore. I never know what may set her off and I certainly do not want Ojo only feet away from her mouth and no ability to get away from her when that happens. Solo leashes, I drop Ojo's and walk Roo away - FAST. Protection of Ojo is our #1 responsibility in this house.

Whoo yea, I feel your tangled mess!! We are practicing with a coupler and trying to get them to walk together, but it's a challenge! They all want to go in different directions, and Cherie is still learning leash so she's like "hey, let me off this thing" all the time. My goal is to get them all on a coupler so they will prance down the street together. Too funny. :) xoxo D

When mama read this she said...."What is up with this women?" When we walk, we walk alone, as each of us can be a PITA in our own right at ANY given time. (Personally, I think mama's lost it....we're perfect angels all the time.)

I bet that is a sight to see. Have you tried teaching loose leash walking or heel? A dog training client of mine had great success walking her boxer and pug in heel, and I gotta say those dogs used to pull like crazy. Anyway, best of luck to you. Take care.
