Fosters...

Jenna on Activities - Mon, August 25 2008

I was wondering if anyone knew the names of dogs on this site that are fosters?? My parents are looking to adopt and I was going to try to help them find a dog. My youngest sister just got married and moved out and took her pittie with her. After being "dogless" for a couple months, they are ready to welcome a new dog into the family. We will be looking into rescues, etc, but I know there are quite a few fosters on this site. My mother would like to adopt a dog that normally other people would not want to adopt due to breed, handicap, or other reason. Thanks for your help!!

Here are the ones I could find using a search term of "Foster". I've already taken out those where "Foster" was their actual name. There may be a few others, but they didn't pull up in the search.

Scamper
Sweet Tart
Rocko
Lexie
Gordon
Sohpie
3 Foster Puppies (GP)

If you like any more info on Jake, I'd be more than willing to talk to you or your parents. Jsut PM me if you are interested and I'll give you my phone number. Jake really is a wonderful dog, but we have a dominanat male in our pack already and finally after 2 1/2 months, they just couldn't get along anymore. Jake did great with our non dominant male Colton and all 3 of our females including our dominant female. I don't know what size dog your parents are looking for, but Jake is about 90 pounds.

I'll step in for Erica on this one :). Erica is fostering Rocko who is on Marci's list. I met him at one of the ARPO events and he is a sweet and fun little guy. She's had him for a while, so I don't know why he isn't getting adopted other than he's a black dog.

here is a link to a post I just did about Lexie, my foster. She has been without a real home of her own for about a year.

Some dog types that can be overlooked are:
1. adults of any kind (most people want puppies)
2. Big Black Dogs aka Black Pearls - hardest to adopt and most often killed in shelters
3. Pit bulls or mixes (including American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, etc) which represent half of the dogs in US shelters
4. senior dogs
5. animals that have been at the shelter for a long time - I don't know about other shelters, but Southside has the "Lonely Hearts club" pets that have been waiting a long time to find furever homes.

Thank your parents from me for looking to do the right thing in trying to help one of the harder to place breeds or "unfashionable" dogs. Medley is so right. Large black dogs (especially seniors and special needs) are some of hardest to place-any shelter will tell you that. Love of Labs www.lolin.org has many, many black labs from young to senior to special needs who have been pulled from shelters and have waited such a long time without finding a forever home. And we all are painfully aware of the fate of pit bulls if they end up in a kill shelter. Whatever choice your parents make I commend them for looking beyond the surface to try and make a difference. I have the feeling that the dog they choose will be one happy dog!

I don't now why either b/c I am a good boy. I do get a little bored at Petsmart and get moody with a few dogs but when I am home I am fine! I love to just be with people and wrestle with my beagle foster sister. I also love my walks and have learned to walk really nicely on a gentle leader. I am on ARPO's page if you want to check me out. www.adoptarpo.org

There are also some other dogs on ARPO's site that are really good dogs but often time get overlooked. Angelina is a sweethart as well as Grizzy. Grizzy and Rock are great buds. Just thought that I would share about these two as well.
Thanks and good luck!

I'd add Myrtle (sp) to that list as well. If I hadn't gotten Charlie, I would probably have brought her home. Gotta love those hearding dogs.

Hard to place ones from Love of Labs (www.lolin.org) right now are Chase (who is awesome and all of us adore him, but his BLACK and MAY be a tiny bit pitt), Bogey, who we have had for months, Duffy, who has a handicapped leg. All of our dogs are awesome and just need someone to overlook that they are not purebred and yellow!! lol We love to take in some of the "misfits" who other lab rescues overlook.

Thank your parents for all of us rescue folks for looking beyond the surface for a dog who really needs a chance!

That Chase is quite handsome... he does look like he may have some 'bully' in him when he's standing (at least in the pics on petfinder). Black (and other dark colored) cats suffer from the same syndrome as their dark dog brethren, sad really... some of the best natured animals I've been around have been black.

Too bad I'm in a small condo and can't afford any more critters, there's just too many out there that need homes!

Here is a list of urgent and hard to place dogs due to age etc.I know there is a dog named Harvard who has a dizziness issue and walks crooked, poor thing but is such a wonderful dog . Also if they were willing to take a dog who is heart worm positive (they pay for the treatment) they would really be helping an animal in need.

How about an English Mastiff (www.midwestmastiffrescue.org) or a Pittie (www.casadeltoro.org)?

I'm a really good dog. The shelter says I"m about 5-6 but I act like I'm about 1-2. I love squeaky toys and bones. I am a little "opinionated" so I would need someone to keep working with me. I'm learning manners here but it's an ongoing process. I'm housebroken, crate trained, know Sit and Shake. I'm not ready yet for adoption because I'm still getting my heartworm treatment then I'll need to be neutered. I like other dogs and love belly rubs! I gained some much needed weight so I'm pretty healthy now. I am very smart as well. I think when I'm better, I would like going on long walks or going to the bark park. I like attention but I don't push for it and I don't get on furniture. Man, I sound like a really great dog! Oh yeah, here's my Petfinder profile http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=11471169 If your folks are 55 or older, I'm only $45 to adopt since I'm older too. these pictures aren't as cute as my IP pictures because they were taken before my spa day.

My mommie works for TL Pets Doggy Daycare downtown and we have a few fosters that need homes, including a momma and baby. The baby, a shepard mix is blind, and is the sweetest dog ever. Momma is also very sweet and just wants some love. Their old home kept them chained up outside all year long and never let them in. They need good homes and someone to love them. Check them out at http://www.lookingforfureverhomes.blogspot.com/

Thanks!!
Earl

All of the pups people have suggested would be grrreat! They all deserve wonderful, loving furever homes! Yay for you and your parents!

Heidi at Wag's is waiting for her furever home. She is a senior dog and has been through a lot. She lived with a homeless couple that couldn't afford to take care of her. So, she went from being homeless to being homeless. She is one of the sweetest dogs I have ever seen. She loves to be brushed and loved on. (http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=11717929)

Also, Amlynn and Mozart have been at Hamilton Co. HS for a long time. Amlynn is a Bull Terrier mix and Mozart is a Cattle Dog/Terrier mix. They are both super cute and are waiting for their furever homes!

Amlynn (http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=9491475)

Mozart (http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=9065106)

Good luck with everything!
