Esmerleda, the aussie

Connie on Activities - Sun, August 24 2008

We've been keeping Esmerelda for the past two weeks. Technically, she is Curt's son's dog, but he is at college so his mom kept Essie. But, she had to go out of town.

Essie is an Australian shepherd. So MUCH energy. She is just a year old. If I didn't have a foster plus Batman I would have worked with her. She is a wild child for sure.

I don't know how people with multiple dogs do it. Having four dogs has been really stressful. Mainly because none of them can run together. Batman can be with either Essie or Lexie, but Lexie and Essie didn't get along. Plus Lexie will eat the cats so she has to be walked through the house going in and out on a leash. Essie is a house dog and she only goes potty while on a leash. So, when I throw her out into the back yard, she just stands by the door. Finally at the end of almost two weeks she has seemed to figure out she can indeed go on her own.

Also, Essie is used to sleeping in the bedroom and here she is crated at night as the bed belongs to Batman. Essie whines for about an hour each night and wakes up at 5 a.m. on the dot each and every morning.

Then there is Curt's dog Draco. It's like a circus.

Luckily, Essie is going home tonight. Time for a good night's sleep!

Four is crazy but the only thing I really can't stand about it is I never have enough time to seriously train all of them. We had five for a week but the foster girl went to her new home! YAy!

We have added to our pack ONLY after the newest one was completely trained. Gordon is finally feeling better so now its time to do some basic training. I am so used to my dogs already understanding the "go" command that it is incredibly frustrating sometimes when I tell Gordon to "go" and he just looks at me and wags his tail instead of "going". Gotta love this handsome boy, but I think"go" is the first command we are going to teach him. "go" is short for "go lay down", we use this alot when we are petting one dog and another tries to come up and horn in on their lovins time.

I guess we're really blessed to have all of our dogs and cats get along. They all live in harmony which is why I can't foster. The last time I did it was very stressful to my 2 cats, Oreo and Cookie. For right now, we're going to stay one happy little family, just the way we are.

I hope you get some sleep tonight, Connie!!!

I think we're going to have to start calling you super woman. I'd go NUTS! I can hardly handle the 2 dogs/2 cats I have now. I couldn't imagine dealing with what you've got.

Yeah, we are lucky that our pack all gets along too. I know how stressed I got when Jake and Hunter were fighting all the time.

Hope you get some quality sleep tonight Connie!

Thankfully, she did go home last night. Whew.

I am going to work with Curt's ex to help train the dog. I figure we will keep her other times in the future as we all promised Tyler we would try and help him keep the dog (although why a kid on his way to college decides to adopt a high-energy Aussie is beyond me).

I like Rhonda's Go command. I'll show Lisa how to teach Essie to go to a mat or something. That's what drives me nuts the most. I was looking for something on the floor and Essie got down to "help" me and tried to herd me all over the floor. She also is always grabbing my arm, which is something my two border collies always used to do. She just puts her jaws around my wrist and tries to get me to go places.

I need to get her a group of ducks to herd or something.
