OT: Our trip out West

NosyRosie on Activities - Wed, August 20 2008

I know I missed OT Tuesday, but better late than never. We would've been home at 9:45p last night but due to some scary airplane maintenance issues (they found missing screws on one of the landing gear flaps??), we didn't get home till 1am.

We were out to see my dad's family in Sacramento. We experienced the California State Fair. That was quite a cultural difference! Not a lot of hillbillies to be seen out there. The floor of the fairgrounds were cement, not dirt. They also have a monorail and ski-lift type thing that goes back and forth through the length of the fairgrounds. 4-H wasn't a big focus out there. The focus seemed to be on the environment (there were hydrogen fueled cars on display) and on the wine culture. People walked around with wine glasses. They had a midway for young kids and then the rest of us. Quite a nice change of pace for a fair. We didn't get our porkchop fix but did get some Mini-Donuts.

The big fried food out there was a deep fried White Castle slider and deep fried Spam (Spam is a very big Asian deal).

We also met Starter the Corgi's cousin-dog, Lily! Her photos are attached to my profile. She's a lab/Australian shep mix. Totally adorable! Oh yeah, we also met Starter's dad's human cousin who owns an awesome restaurant in Sacramento. Mmmm. We had cucumber sorbet for dessert!

I also discovered a yummy brand of gourmet chocolate...http://www.vosgeschocolate.com/ I secretly enjoyed the Bacon Chocolate bar. What can I say, I was having a bad PMS day. The bacon smell was overwhelming (like opening a bag of bacon dog treats) but in the end, it was pretty good. Definitely not something you can eat a lot of at once!

I love Spam... Glad you made it home safely. The state fair in CA sounds more like a convention. I like to see cows, pigs, horses, you know..fair stuff.

I'm going out to buy some Spam...

They did have an animal area and it was clean! They had a variety of pregnant cows and pigs with due dates written above the pens. I was getting impatient with the cow who's due date was the day we were there. She just seemed like she wanted people to stop gawking at her. They had a petting zoo, too. Oh, and a Donkey rescue was there, too. I got to pet Donkeys.

OMG I LOVE VOSGES!!! The bacon chocolate bar is THE BEST!!! You should get the mini-bar samples they're awesome. The gal that owns Vosges is from Ft Wayne if I'm not mistaken. They've got shops in Chicago & NYC.

And for pork chops- nothing beats Minnesota's State Fair and pork chops on a stick!! Their big thing is "on a stick" so everything you can imagine that's edible is on a stick. Fun times!

Welcome back, Kotter. Bacon chocolate? I don't know how I feel about that. Was it the perfect combination of salt and sweet?

Missing screws???!?!?! That's scary. Glad you made it back.

My aunt Amy went to California for a road trip and said that all the California people think Indiana is full of pitch fork wielding hillbillies with few or no teeth.

This chocolate bacon sounds delicious! Mom says no to the chocolate and no to anything more than a taste of bacon. :(

It's okay, Dad sneaks us bacon all the time. :)

Glad your back safe. I've been to a lot of county fairs but never a state fair. Sounds cool. As for the cow...would you want people standing around while you were trying to give birth?? Can't say as I blame her for being perskickity.

Glad you made it home safely and that you have a wonderful trip. I would like to walk around our state fair with a glass of wine. That would've been great with my lobster bites from Murphy steakhouse tent.
