Marion County Humane Society

Amanda on Activities - Wed, August 20 2008

I just received an email from the Marion Country HS asking for help so I thought I would forward it on you all of us here.

My name is Kathi Winstead and I am contacting you on behalf of Diann Wellman, the new manager of the Humane Society Shelter in Marion, Ind.

We are in dire need of help....the shelter will be moving to another building and consolidating with the city in four weeks. However, the shelter has become so run down that has has earned a poor reputation and donations of volunteer time and money have stopped. Some of the animals have only been out of the cage while it is cleaned and then put right back in.

It is so full that there is a question of how many animals will be allowed to go to the new shelter.

I am trying to contact every group that might possibly be able to help us. There are approximately 90 dogs and over 100 cats that we need to get out of here before the closure.

We will work with any group on transport.

Also, if there is any other group (reputable, of course) that you know that might be able to help, please pass the word. We would gladly talk to other states, if necessary.

You can either contact me, Kathi Winstead at
earsinfo@sbcglobal.net

or the new manager of the shelter, Diann Wellman at
dwellmanmgchs@yahoo.com or

Phone 765-618-9293

If she doesn't answer immediately, please leave a message that you're calling about rescue and she will return your call ASAP.
Again, we are in a time crunch and don't know how many of these babies will be allowed to transfer to the other building. Thank you so muchfor any help you can give.

How ironic! I was just wondering about this today. This is the shelter we were discussing a while back, if I remember correctly. I would be willing to help with transport, if they can find places to take them in.

I have been contacting breed specific rescues to see if they can help -If anyone has some time please look around the web and send the petfinder #"s for these dogs to their breed rescues-you never know , saving just one would be worth it -

Just pointing out that the shelter mentioned here is in Marion, the *CITY*, not Marion County. It's about a 1-1.5hr drive north of Indianapolis, not to be confused with the shelter on the NW side of Indy.

I did this a while back with a shar pei mix (Mr. Wrinkles). It was ironic, but I found out the rescue I contacted to take him had already taken him a week or two earlier! Here is a site they were using to post pics of the dogs they still have there. I don't think they have any pics of the cats. I don't know if this is up-to-date at the moment though. http://www.picsbycindy.com/marion_grant_dogs.htm

I'm thinking about seeing if I can take a few cats to foster and possibly adopt them out through one of the rescues here.
