Teaching Your Dog's Name

Preston on Training - Wed, August 20 2008

There is nothing more embarrassing as a pet owner than to call your dog by his/her name and they do not respond. This technique will ensure that your dog will respond every time you call his/her name. This is the first thing I do with any new dog owner.

First, grab some treats that your dog really enjoys. Break the treats up into tiny pieces. We always want to make the treats as small as possible for the health of the dog. When your dog is not looking at you (e.g. sniffing around, laying down, walking away, etc.) call out his/her name that you want them to respond to. It is important to say the name once. When they look up at you and make eye contact role the treat to the dog. Do not throw it at them and do not call them to you to give them the treat. By doing that you are teaching "come" not the name.

Stay tuned for more training tips from indy's downtowntrainer. Take care. PRESTON
