Four down, one to go!

dreya on Activities - Tue, August 19 2008

About three weeks or so ago, I noticed a mama cat and her kittens had taken up residence in our shed. I started feeding the mama kitten food, she was SO skinny. She still is pretty skinny. Sunday I was able to get the mama and one kitten. (i don't know how old the kittens are, theyre about 3-4 lbs and are eating the moist kitten food)

I called Greenfield Animal Control and asked if I could borrow a trap so a lady from there brought it to our house on her way home. (i told them my hubby doesnt get home from work till way after they close and we are working with one car right now)

So, i set it up last eve and was able to trap two of the kittens. I re set it and waited for the other one to go in. He didn't. At about midnight last night, i was watching out the window and saw some movement. I got out ye ol mag light and saw some eyes glowing. Yay! I went out and about halfway to the shed, I noticed the little creature was way to big to be the kitten. I had trapped a big ol irritated possum. I drug the trap to the field and opened it and he ran off. I re set the trap and waited by the window for about an hour and the kitten didn't go in. So i took the food out cause i didn't want to trap another possum or something else.

Early this morn I went out and re set it. The kitten comes up to me but as soon as i move he/she bolts. So the trap is set with some yummies and hopefully the kitty will go in it.

They are all in the cat room, blocked off from our kids. Between us and a nice lady that Pam knows, we are going to have them fixed and shots and get them good homes of their own.

They're cute little tuxedo babies! The mama is pretty much all black, she looks and acts like Sweetie. So far, she likes me and her kittens and that's about it. She's come around a LOT since she first came here. I went out to the barn every day at least four or five times a day to feed and hang out with them so they would get more used to me.

I'll let yall know when I trap the other little bugger. Any suggestions would be lovely! :)

I got the last kitty! Yay! I just looked out there and he was in the trap! They have all been reunited! I felt so bad for the mama, that first night when I got her and one baby, she was looking at me like "what have you done with my children?!" She ran right up to him when I came in with the trap. :)

Thanks, Stacy! Actually, like Connie said in a post awhile back, I was just one cog in the wheel! Pam from Wags knows someone who offered to help with the cost of getting them s/n and vacs! I just didn't have enough mulah for all of it! Plus, I called Indy Feral and they gave me a name and number for a lady that helps people in hancock county. She is giving me five coupons to get them s/n for $10 each through Hamilton Co. Low Cost S/N! They'll be able to crash here till we can find them the furever homes they deserve!

Maybe try an old fashioned 'drop trap' if the last kitten isn't quite heavy enough to spring the trap on its own?

If it is... I can't think of any other suggestions other than stinky wet food, or maybe sardines (in oil or water, no seasonings).

I was just now able to get the last kitten. Woohoo! I was worried about that too, them not being heavy enough to spring the trap. Thanks!

Dreya, you're such a good person. I'm glad you were able to get that last little guy. He (and mom) will be much happier together. Terrific news about the s/n coupons, too.

Wow, you guys totally gave me that warm fuzzy feeling! :)

They're doing good this morning, they kittens run and hide when i go in the cat room but then they come out when they see its me. after i've been in the room a while they will play and romp but they still need lots of socializing. the mama comes right up to me and wants copious amounts of lovins, she has been starved for lovins for so long, poor mama.

I'll get some pics up today!
