Question on Baths

Mama T on Health - Mon, August 18 2008

I know--the evil four letter word ;0).

A friend at work has mentioned that her vet told her to use diluted fabric softener as a kind of creme rinse for her dog and that it also helps prevent fleas. I've never heard about it--Any heard of this??

Mom heard it would repel mosquito's but not sure about fleas. She didn't try it because she wasn't sure what scent we wanted. and she didn't want it to clash with the other smells us boys wanted. lol

I think i would just worry about allergic reactions...

Heard of it before when I had my cocker but I never did (she had allergies). Jersey Joe's Mom probably knows more being a groomer.

Pual Mitchel has a Tea Tree pet shampoo for dogs now that's gentle and works on fleas and ticks.

Odd you should mention this...just today at the vet I heard a lady who was battling fleas on her dog and she used Dawn dish liquid to bathe him. She let it sit on him for five minutes before rinsing. Sounds pretty drying to me. Betcha he's not greasy.

Maybe my dad should put on diluted fabric softener instead of after shave if it repels mosquitos. Those critters just love my dad.

I don't know about the dryer sheets. I'm allergic to them, so it wouldn't be an option in our house. I know I'm about ready to use the dog shampoo on myself. I found a shampoo that has a LOT of citronella oil in it. The critters leave the dogs alone and go straight to me!

Fleas have some sort of oily barrier on their outer 'shell' that keeps them from drowning in water. Any dish soap (though the original blue Dawn is most often recommended) that "breaks down grease" will remove that barrier from the flea and it drowns in the bath water.

I've actually used it on tiny kittens too young for Advantage. Worked REALLY well and never dried out their fur.

I do know that fabric softner sheets will keep bees away. When my son was in preschool and went to the apple orchard, they pinned one to the back of each child. I have seen others to this too.

Know what my mom did?! She keeps our dog shampoo on the edge of the tub. Well, she ran out of her own shampoo and forgot to get more, so one morning she had to use our dog shampoo!! HAHAHAHA! Oh, gotta go, here she comes! :)

Very funny! You are certainly joshing us. Is she flea-free?

I'm surprised I haven't done it yet. I've got more ETB shampoo than my own.

I actually did do that! I have some oatmeal and aloe shampoo that I use on them. It smells pretty good. I was in the shower with wet hair and no shampoo. (I had already filled my shampoo bottle with water and got all the leftover out the day before.) I just forgot to go buy more shampoo. (I'm way too busy.) Anyway, I looked down and there was the dog shampoo. I figured it was better than nothing! :)
