I need some serious advise

Tabitha on Training - Mon, August 18 2008

Seth got out yet again yesterday. This has been at least the 10th time he has gotten out since we moved. I am usually able to catch him after I search for him for a bit, but he is getting smarter each time he gets out. He runs and climbs under the decks where it is absolutely impossible to get him. I tried everything to lure him out of there; I crinkled a bag, I tried turkey...he wanted nothing to do with any of it.

I had to get down to Greenwood to look after my aunt and uncle's dogs as I am staying there all week. My mom was coming to get Seth because he was going to stay at her house all week. So, as bad as I felt about it, I had to leave him. Luckily he had his collar on and a few hours later my next door neighbor called me and let me know he had him in his dog's old crate, so my mom went and got him.

But my question is...how can I get him to stop doing this?!?! It is driving me crazy. I do not want Seth to be an outdoor cat because even know he has his claws, I am afraid he could get hurt by a bigger animal or ran over by a car. At the same time, he is so quick and sneaky, he gets out all the time. Please, please, please SOMEONE advise me on this matter!!!

Edgar is also bad about wanting to get out. Have you tried a squirt gun? If you can discourage Seth from standing near the door when you are near the door, that might do the trick. If you keep the squirt gun near the door then squirt him, he will hopefully soon learn that being near the door when you are going out is a really bad idea.

I always use my leg to block Ed, and after he ran into my foot really hard a few times, he figured out that it wasn't paying to try and get out the door.

Years ago I had the same problem with our Snoopy cat. He wanted outside. I don't want to worry you but Snoopy started spraying in the house because he wanted out sooo bad. I had to give in to him. He did come home a couple of times with battle injuries which required a trip to the vet.

This is one reason why most of our cats were females. Our favorite cat was a male. We raised him from the time he was a week old so he was a scary cat and didn't want to go outside. He was 17 when he died. Snoopy was about 10 when he passed. Outside cats don't live as long.

Have you tried using a harness and letting him outside with you?

with a dash of lemon juice in it too. Maybe confine him before you need to enter / exit the house? Lot of work but safety is a thing in our house right now so we are used to those extra precautions.
