Boomer is sick...again

Brad on Health - Fri, August 15 2008

Well, let's start from the beginning. Right before I moved down here, Boomer had what I was informed as the beginnings of an UTI. I was given a few pills, science diet, and sent on my way. In time Boomer finished the diet and pills and seemed fine. Now that I'm down here, I found out I'm going to a PT convention and had to find Boomer a sitter. Found one that is accredited, but had to have an Alabama vet for Boomer because she wouldn't watch him without one, which makes sense. About ten days ago I found Boomer a vet...a cat vet clinic no less with emergency care. I was very impressed. A couple days after that, Boomer began meowing while using his litter box. Last night, I found ten clumps of urine from that small cat. Today I brought him to his new vet to find out several little things. First: Boomer has a heart murmer that no one found...have to watch that. Second: Because of Boomer's activity level and water consumption he may have hyperthyroidism. Blood work is being done. Third: According to this doctor, the medication the Indiana vet gave me works minimally at best, and if the infection was strong enough that medication wouldn't help. Finally, with a little urine work we found that the meds did not help. Boomer now has a bad full blown UTI. He has three liquid medications formulated with vicadin to help his sphincter release more easily and more food. I sort of feel bad for not second guessing the original vet, but like she said, Boomer only had the beginnings of a UTI. However, Boomer is now on big time medication (3+science diet to be specific), and I hope he'll take it easily enough. Knowing Boomer, that is a false hope. Just thought I would keep you guys updated on Boomer's medical probs.

That's awful, Boomer dude! I've had those and they're nasty... Did the vet check for crystals in your urine? Those can cause UTIs and be fatal of not caught and dissolved. Not to scare you... This was my problem so I eat a special food from Royal Canin called Urinary S/O and I've been crystal and UTI-free ever since. Cookie and Pearlie eat it too so they're covered. The crystals are very common in boy cats because of our ureathra... *blushing*. Take your meds like a good boy!! Keep us posted ,ok?

Brad, I'm so glad you were able to find a great vet--and a cat vet no less! I sure hope the meds work this time around and that Boomer gets rid of the infection this time around. Keep us posted about the bloodwork for the hypothyroidism.

Oh, have fun at the convention and try not to worry about Boomer. Sounds like you found a great person to look after him while you're gone.

Gee whiz, I sure hope Boomz is better soon! Maybe you should buy him a new mousie to make him feel better.

Boomer has another appointment in two weeks. The vet said if he's still having the infection, he's going to check for crystals. That vet is on top of it!

Boomer's awful young to be hyperthyroid... that's a disease for old-pharts like me! I've got a mild/moderate heart murmur too (due to hyperthyroidism).

Good (?) news about that is it's fairly inexpensive to treat w/ meds once you pay out what seems to be a small fortune for tests. At least my mom had to... Seems the 'usual' tests weren't picking up much. Once everything is figured out (like dosage) the costs drop WAY down.

It's only about $20/mo for my meds -- I get the kind that's rubbed in my ear twice per day, pills are cheaper, but this way is easier for me and mom.

Since my heart murmur is only 2/3 (out of 6), I'm not currently on any meds for it, just regular 'quickie' vet visits for monitoring. Since I started the thyroid meds, it's remained the same for the past 3 years.
