Moving- Leaving Dogs at Home

Rachael on Activities - Tue, August 12 2008

This Sunday is a big day for me. I'm moving in to my dorm on campus, which is about an hour away from home. Of course, all of the boys are going to be staying at home with my parents. For the most part, Wiggles and Miles will be unaffected. Miles isn't attached to any one person, and Wiggles is glued to my mom. Gunner, however, is my shadow and I'm unsure how he's going to react to me being gone completely. I have a feeling it's going to stress him out, because he is already high strung and anxious. What sort of things can I do to prepare him for this, and what sort of things can my parents do to help him once I'm gone?

So far, he's getting my two old pillows, an old blanket and a t-shirt that all smell like me. I know having my smell will comfort him to an extent, but other than that, I'm at a loss as to what else I can do. Just to add, I want to avoid drugs if it's possible. I know of Rescue Remedy, but would that be at all helpful if he's stressed?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

We go through this every time my husband goes out of town. They adore him because he is the cool guy who takes them n mega walks and knows just where they need to scratch . We learned years ago with our other dog, Maggie that they quickly associate suitcases with their bud leaving . He sneaks his bags out when they can't see . Then after he leaves I do distracting things like treasure hunts with snacks around the house and they do fine till he comes home again .

Thanks for the suggestions. You've got GSPs, so you understand exactly what I mean about Gunner's behavior. I don't want him to be too babied, but knowing my mom, he will be.
