FIDO (Friends of Indianapolis Dogs Outdoors) did an outreach program today at 30th St. and Dearborn. We did vaccinations, flea treatments, microchipping, education, etc. We thought we might get 100 dogs. I think we had 100 dogs in line when we opened at 2 p.m. We had dogs in line until 6 when we closed. We had run out of just about everything.
I never saw so many pit bulls in my life, but not one of them got into trouble, though it took five of us to put a muzzle on a tiny dog that decided it wanted to eat us.
Lots and lots of unaltered dogs. I hope we convinced a few of them to go to FACE. We did our best at that.
I never even got the name of the vet who helped us. But that woman was so dedicated. She never got a single break. She was so awesome.
People were great too as some of them had to stand in line for well over an hour to get to the more popular tables such as the vaccinations. I was doing flea treatments and fly treatments. I was supposed to do education, but it quickly became apparent with the large crowd that we needed to get people moving along, so I ended up helping at the treatment area.
I did use one of the techniques I learned yesterday in how to restrain a dog with the little dog. We had to get two leashes on it and pull it between two of us, while another person got its head and another its legs and then someone to get the muzzle on.
There were some great looking dogs. Sadly, we didn't have time to play with them or pet them.
Channel 8 was there and a photographer from the Star came out to take photos for IndyPaws, so hopefully those will be up in a few days.
