Pretty Collar Experiment

Marci on Behavior - Wed, August 06 2008

Follow-up to previous big/scary dog discussion. I'm here to tell you that Charlie's new "pretty" collar has made a change in how he is perceived (at least in our neighborhood). I took him for a walk last night around the neighborhood in it. At least 3 people stopped to "pet the dog" that have been very obviously afraid of Charlie in the past. People can be so superficial - Egads! At least I have one more tool to get Charlie those positive interactions. So silly, but he does look nice in it. I'll try to get some pictures of him in it and post them.

For those with big and/or fierce looking dogs (or anyone else who wants a attractive, safe collar), you might want to check out the collars at 2houndsdesign.com. They have designs from nerdy to silly to fun to extremely elegant. Several trainers here in town highly recommend them for their strength and security as well as attractiveness. They are also guaranteed to not break the dog's coat. These are not cheap collars, but are extremely strong and well made. I know several people who've had them for years.

All my hairballs have either sparkly, or shiny (faux patent leather) collars. :)

I love the idea of putting a pretty /cute collar on a big dog. Children especially would be less fearful . I love to give rescue dogs a new collar and leash . They always seem so much perkier and people comment if it's bright and cheery and of course the dog thinks they are praising him. They always look so sad with a faded old collar :(

They sure will. Those are really pretty designs. Mine have silk brocade decco collars. One in tan/terra cotta and the other in greens.

I got Batman one that has "Pow" "Bam" etc. on it. So, he is like a Batman comic book. It is from the same company. Their collars are awesome! It's a good idea about putting one on a big dog. I'll to get one for Lexie.

Another great website for nice collars is http://www.upcountryinc.com/ They're very reasonably priced and have adorable designs. Finn has at least 5 of them and Trooper just got his first, the blue and green argyle. Very cute!

I love the collars! I really love the orange dragonfly. Zena would look great in it.

That's a great idea, Marci. I always put a cute bandana on Olivia when we go out. I'll have to check out the collars.

Oh, I love those collars. They are so lovely. I can just see Carolina in any of the Asian silks...oh, which to choose?!

I sent the link to my sister who makes a point of putting pretty and feminine collars on Kaya, the rottie, because people are intimidated by her appearance.
