Brewer's Yeast

Mama T on Health - Mon, August 04 2008

Question for the Cat Mama's--I've been giving ETB Brewer's Yeast in his food. I thought it was rather odd that some days the tablets would be gone but the food is not until this morning when I found my thief. Miss Baby is helping herself to the tablets. My concern is 1- Is it okay for her to take it? and 2- I give ETB 4 tablets for 40 lbs...she may be 10 lbs, will this hurt her? I've begun to bury them in the bottom of the bowl now.

I have a dog cookie recipe that calls for brewers yeast but I couldn't find it in the store. Where do you get it? I ended up substituting flax meal, and it worked fine, but if I make them again I might like to try it as written.

I found this:

Use about a teaspoon of brewer's (or nutritional) yeast daily for cats and small dogs, and a tablespoon for a 50-pound dog. Some animals are yeast intolerant and will react with a skin allergy. Discontinue use if this occurs. Combine the yeast with the garlic in your animal's food, and consider doubling the dosage during peak flea season.

I've got the tablets but I'm not sure about powder. Maybe Pet Supplies Plus or some place along that line.

If there are no yeast allergies, I don't believe Brewers Yeast will hurt. Mommy got the big tabs of Brewers Yeast and Garlic at Pet Supplies Plus. The big ones are for dogs 50lbs so, I get 1/2 of one a day. The cats get them too. Petsmart use to have the smaller tabs but, I would have to take two of them. I eat them right up from Mom's hand. They taste so good. The last bottle Mommy got at Pet Supplies Plus were a little grainy and soft. It seems as if they got damp or humidity in the bottle. They still taste good though.
