Gross backyard discovery

Debbie on Behavior - Fri, August 01 2008

Yesterday Keith mowed the grass, so I went out to the back yard for poop patrol. I saw feathers scattered about (you know where this is going...) but didn't see anything else. As I got to the very back of the yard, I went to pick up what I thought was poop but it turned out to be a beak (just a beak) with a throat and spinal cord attached to it. It was soo gross and it stunk. I'm assuming this was another of Hoovie's victims since he's the fast one and outside so much of the day, which is his choice. Apparently the beak was too pointy to eat and the rest of it just stayed with it.

You just never know what will be found in the back yard with dogs. Gotta love 'em.

This would explain the stench that came in with Kirby a few days ago. I saw him rolling in something over there...

ugh...Did I tell you about the evening I was out trimming the suckers off some of my trees and heard something in overhead? I thought it was a squirrel, but then I looked over in the yard at Penny who was a few feet away from me and noticed she had something in her mouth. I rushed over there and two baby doves had fallen out of their nest. Penny had one of them in her mouth, but she hadn't injured it (yet). I took the bird out of her mouth and made all three dogs go inside. I tried to get those babies up and out of the grass, but they were just learning to fly and would skip/fly (not really fly, but somewhere in between skipping and flying) away from me. I finally just brought them some water and scrounged up some birdseed and hoped for the best. In the morning, they were gone. I choose to believe they learned how to fly overnight and were able to be safely back in the tree. Thankfully, I never found any skeletal remains to prove otherwise! heehee....

Sorry for your gruesome discovery. It's a dog's life. :-)

Mom's glad I'm not a typical "dog" in this sense. Roo perhaps but not me. I don't even chase cats or bunnies. But my ball.. that's a different story.

Luckily my dogs don't catch anything, the squirrels are usually too fast.
But my neighbor's cat loves to catch birds. Once I found a nest that had been shredded in my front yard and a big gaping hole in the giant bush in front of my house. There were feathers scattered around. We did find two dead tiny baby birds on the ground. It looked like a massacre.

Wow, Kirby, pretty violent behavior there, ya think? Sounds like good eatin' though. That yard perfume stuff is pretty attractive to me, but Mom always yells at me to stop it when she sees me getting stinky. Then sometimes I have to go right into the bathtub. Don't tell anybody I told you this, please, it would ruin my BFF Princess reputation.) xoxo FiFi

I HATE finding stuff like that. My first experience with a dog being a hunter was with Sheila. I went out to call her in, and all I could see was bloody snow - all over the place. I just about had a heart attack because I couldn't see her. Then, she proudly trotted around the corner as if to say "Look what I did, isn't it terrific". She'd never been a hunter before that, and only a few times since. My only thought was that she must have cornered a possum and had to defend herself. Of course now my world if VERY different. Charlie is a pretty serious hunter. To date he's caught 3 mice, 1 pigeon, and 1 baby possum that I know of.

That really is never any fun. Gunner is the same way when it comes to hunting, and I can't blame him in the least, but that doesn't mean I appreciate the gifts he brings me routinely. There's been more birds that I can remember, about 5 squirrels, and a gopher.

Wow! I am in awe of Gunner! Now, I understand he is a hunting dog but I'd LOVE to shadow him for a while. A gopher?! *whew*

When my 2 GSPs were still with us, one of them brought something into the house and the other was having a fit because she wanted it. All I could see was short black fuzz that looked like velvet. Thinking it was a hair scrunchy, I stuck my finger in Ruby's mouth to get it and IT turned out to be a dead vole (a kind of field mouse). That got scooped up quickly and disposed of before it could become doggie perfume. She also brought a box turtle about the size of a human skull to me once, also. Morgan, Ruby's GSP companion, pulled the tail off a rabbit once. Starter and Trekkie found some bird remnants a week or so ago, but were soundly discouraged from perfuming themselves with it.
