Torn ACL Not Really torn!

Melissa on Health - Wed, July 30 2008

I took Miss Priss to the vet yesterday and she has a fluxating patella (sp). We went to Holt Road Animal Hospital. They were very reasonable on shots and heart worm, much cheaper than who we went to previously. He said he wouldn't even recommend surgery until she has had at least a couple of months to heal. She is putting more weight on her her leg, but she's not 100% yet. According to him, if she had a torn ACL, she wouldn't be trying to use it. So she has to be severely limited on movement and kept on a leash and no chasing squirrels for a long time. I just wanted to thank you for the suggestions.

I'm glad you got a second opinion. We don't know much about the fluxuating patella thing, but hopefully it will heal on its own and you won't need to have surgery.

This seems to be a common ailment on dogs. I know several that have this problem. I hope you heal up soon and need nothing done.

I guess it's common in most small breeds, especially Eskimos. She's a jumper and she loves to dance on her hind legs, which is trait of Eskies.

Keeping her immobile and on a leash in her own yard is going to be hard for her, but she is using her leg more and more

Perl had a very slight ACL tear along with a slightly torn meniscus; she was still using her leg, though favoring it. Just an FYI. So it's possible that there is a tear, but a very slight one.

The Vet did mention that, but as long as I'm strict on keeping her movements limited, it can heal reasonably well. That's proving to be the hardest part. She has so much energy that she just wants to run every where, and jump up and down the stairs. The vet we went to Tuesday did a more thorough exam of the leg, and watched her for about 10-15 minutes to see how she walked on it. Of course after the shots, she just wanted to hide under the chair. The emergency vet made it sound like she needed surgery right away if she was going to walk again.
