A friend needs help

Rhonda on Breeds - Tue, July 29 2008

I have a co-worker that is looking to add to his furry family. I have talked him out of going to a BYB and into rescuing a dog but he is looking for 1 of 2 specific breeds. He has an 8 yo Pom and is looking for anothe Pom or a Yorkie. I don't know much about smaller breed rescues in the area but have learned LOTS from my IP friends. I've looked on the internet and know about Petite Paws Rescue, but are there any others? Is there a Yorkshire or Pomeranian Breed Rescue in the Midwest? I know not all Rescues post on Petfinder so I'm trying to get all the info I can. I know the IP community is HUGE and can help me out. He's willing to wait a little while but he and his wife are anxious to add to their family. I'm glad he's willing to rescue and now I feel like I need to help him find a dog because he listened to me and didn't buy from this creepy BYB.

I was just perusing shelties on petfinder and there was a small dog rescue on there that listed yorkies and poms... I can't think of the name, but I'd definitely do a petfinder search. Good for you and good for your friend!!

I saw a Yorkie mix on Petfinder yesterday. I'll try to find it again.

Pom Posse is always looking for foster homes on CL. Here's a link to their site http://www.pomposse.org/ You might want to stress to him that it might take a little while to find just the right dog but it will be worth it since the dog will be with them for so many years. I'm glad he's thinking about adopting at least. Here's a link to Poms on Petfinder http://www.petfinder.com/search/search.cgi?animal=Dog&breed=Pomeranian&preview=1&exact=1 and here's one for Yorkies http://www.petfinder.com/search/search.cgi?animal=Dog&breed=Yorkshire%20Terrier%20Yorkie&preview=1&exact=1 As far as rescues go, I would definitely make sure they are legitimate. Check guidestar.com for 501ce status, google the rescue's name to check for articles, etc. I personally love the Petite Paws group. They're all great and work so hard for all dogs. REscue Farm also has both breeds right now and I LOVE them!

Indiana Petite Paws has quite a few dogs that were just recently added to the website and more coming in all the time. We are not taking Poms in at this point because we are so full and never enough foster homes. There are some good Pom rescues in the area that we we work with frequently.

We got Ringo from Smaller Paws & Pom Rescue in North Manchester. Jo Norris is WONDERFUL, and runs the rescue out of her home. They primarily take in Poms, but also have other small-breed dogs. http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/IN294.html

I made sure to stress that finding the right rescue dog might take a little time. HE knows that but is working on getting his wife to understand that.

Thanks guys! I knew I could count on you all!

For anyone you know who is interested in rescuing but wants a specific breed, check out this list of resources a group of us put together on Dogster.
