Found, lost chocolate-red lab mix

Rachel on Lost Pets - Tue, July 29 2008

I feel horrible right now.

This evening at around 8:30, my sister was walking the two little girls she babysits in their stroller back home from a friend's house. Right around North and 9 (Greenfield), a pretty reddish colored lab mix (NO COLLAR) showed up and started following her. Only, this dog didn't just follow her... The dog heeled the entire time. This dog followed my sister, right by her side, the entire way home, which was a fairly long walk (Pratt St.). They passed other people and dogs, yet this dog stayed right by my sister's side, regardless of how fast or slow she walked. Try as she might to ignore the dog, it followed her home.

So, my sister called me and I came over to see what we could do. We got the dog into the backyard (she was extremely obedient) and found that she was female, maybe 5 or 6 years old, and had some sort of vision problem. Her eyes were unlike anything I'd seen... bluish and opaque all over, but not blotchy like typical cataracts. She obviously had some vision, but I don't know how she could have seen very well. She was also wet, as if she had been swimming recently (Brandywine Creek??). Although she was panting heavily, we couldn't get her to drink any water. She was also rather chubby around the tummy area, and I couldn't tell if she was just well-fed or possibly pregnant.

Whatever the dog's story, we decided it would be best to keep her overnight where she would be safe, then take her to get her scanned for a microchip first thing in the morning. We'd figure things out from there. Basically I just couldn't bear the thought of this amazingly sweet, possibly blind dog roaming the streets in the dark where she could get hit by a car. All we had to do was wait for the kids' mom to come home, so we could take the dog back to our house. Once my sister was "freed" of her babysitting duties about an hour later, we went out in the backyard to get the dog. She was not there.

We still cannot figure out how she possibly escaped the backyard. I have no idea. We drove around for over an hour, looking for her, but how do you call a dog whose name you don't know? We'd been referring to her as "Mama Dog," but obviously she didn't respond tot hat.

So, we are now both worried sick about this unbelievably sweet, possibly blind and pregnant dog who could be wandering the streets as we speak. I hope that our "Mama Dog" had simply slipped away for an evening to visit my sister, then jumped the fence and returned home. I hope that she's safe and warm back in her home where she is loved and cared for, but I can't help but be furious with myself for not keeping a better eye on her in the back yard. I'm so worried that she's lost and in danger of getting hit by a car or getting injured by something she can't see.

I suppose what I'm getting to is... Is there anyone in Greenfield who knows a sweet tempered, pretty red lab mix with strange blue eyes? Is she safe at home, or has she been lost for a while? :(

I'm nowhere near that area, but my heart goes out to you both. Sometimes doing the right thing doesn't work out the way you had planned. That girl is sure in our prayers, and thanks to you and your sister for trying to help her.

Today a Lost ad appeared in the paper, so I called. It turns out our "Mama Dog" is really ten years old (she looked great for being 10!) and her name is Shasta. She got loose and her owners are just heartbroken. So, if you see a reddish-brown lab in Greenfield, please let me know!
