Hi Brandy. I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. This is the dog that my sister is fostering http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=10646469 she is really sweet and has been around kids and all size dogs. Paula's only had her a few days but she was an owner surrender so at least we know her background. the rescue we volunteer with has several dogs that might fit into your lifestyle. Here's their website www.wagssstrays.org all dogs are crate trained, housebroken, altered, microchipped, up to date on shots, etc and the adoption fee is $125. that's a great deal if you think about getting a free dog then having to take them to the vet to get all that done. It would cost way more than that. You can also search this site under pet name for foster or adopt to see who else is fostering. Good luck with your search.
There is a lab rescue I know of in Columbus: Happy Labs Rescue. Best of luck with your search and here is the link:

Sorry, I thought of a couple of more for you to look into. Our L'il Bit of Heaven Animal Rescue near Martinsville was completely devastated by the floods this summer. I believe they desperately need to place as many dogs as possible. They have several lab mixes, shepherd mixes and I think even a boxer mix. http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/IN327.html
Also, Holden at the Hamilton County Humane Society is in need of heartworm treatment and it has been sponsored, but he cannot get it until he is in a quiet atmosphere. They are calling him a lab mix and his eyes are so sweet... http://www.petfinder.com/search/search.cgi?animal=Dog&breed=Labrador+Retriever&age=&size=&sex=&location=46060&name=Holden
Good Luck!
Love of Labs is a labrador retriever rescue based out of Noblesville. They are desperate to find homes since they have guys that they don't even have foster homes for that "on the clock" at kill shelters, and are running out of time. Their website is www.lolin.org. Please consider one of these dogs needing a home.
Grrace.org is a rescue that houses golden retrievers. Right now, they have two fox hound/pointers as one of their foster moms recently passed away. Our dog daycare www.tlpetsdoggydaycare.com also fosters and she always has dogs.
Good luck with your search!
These two guys that are available from GRRACE are both wonderful guys. Their mom (who passed away recently) was my Shelby's foster mom when he came into rescue. She fostered many, many dogs over the years of various breeds. They are both well behaved and have had excellent care. Both were "rescues" that wormed their way into their mom's heart to stay. I have met and interacted with both of them. Either or both would be a wonderful companion for the right person.
Don't forget the Pyrs...gentle as a golden, soft as bunnies...www.igpr.org always has lots of them, young and old! Talk with Jane or John about them...you can start by fostering, if you'd like to first see what they're like, personality-wise...
Walker that Jim is referring to now has only until this Friday in the shelter.
Sympathy for your loss, but kudos on opting to adopt! There are plenty of wonderful pups needing a home. In addition to the local shelters you might also check out the freebies.
I have been seeing lots of dogs being given away on the yahoo group for indy freecycle (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/IndyFreecycleNetwork/). They are posted by individuals rather than shelters, and if you get one there, you are probably keeping one out of the shelter. Just today someone posted "german pinchers" (dobermans, I assume?) that they wanted to rehome together. I also saw a boxer recently, and my mom got a golden/lab mix in June.
Hi Brandy - I didn't connect this post with your new photos of Otis earlier. I vote for the Pyrs, they are so wonderful and the Pyr rescue group here is great. Jake, the foster dog, stole my heart, but with my little dogs, I can't have a big one right now. Jake is being considered for adoption now, take a look at him! Maybe he could be a great dog for you if his adoption doesn't go through. Pyrs are like big teddy bears. Good luck in your search for your new buddy. xoxo Diane

This fella is on death row at Indianapolis Animal Care and Control. Hopefully he is still alive, I posted this on Friday. :(
He is at Johnson County Animal Care and Control. Do you know if they let rescue's pull from here.
I do know that with IACC once they are on Petfinder they usually do not put them down. That is how Rocko was safe for over 5 months.
Whoops! You are correct! I have contacts in Johnson County, we can get him pulled if we have a foster, or forever home. :)
I fell in love with this sweet girl Saturday at the WAGS Petco adoptions!! Her name is Shilo. http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=11530551
