Tilly's licking her pee

NosyRosie on Health - Sun, July 27 2008

Last week I saw her licking a warm pee spot in the carpet after her accident. We keep her gated in the master bath (it's small) with a piddle pad. She's only had two accidents in one week and it's probably from me sleeping in an extra hour. At any rate, this afternoon I let her outside and she peed in the grass. I gave her lots of praise. She turns around and starts licking the grass she just peed on.

What is that about?? Freckles did that towards the end when she was peeing blood. I thought it was the taste/smell of the blood that brought some sort of wild canine instinct.

Could Tilly have a urinary tract infection? If so, there would be small traces of blood which might explain the behavior.

I've seen Kirby and Hoover do that with each others' or another dogs'... I don't think I've seen them lick their own though. Do you think that her medication is making her pee smell funny/appealing?

I've never seen my two do this with pee. I've read on different rescue sites that some dogs will do this to avoid punishment for accidents. Maybe Tilly is trying to hide the evidence?

I have been known to do this with Max's pee in the grass outside, but not my own.
