trouble forgiving myself

Susan on Lost Pets - Fri, July 25 2008

This is going to be a sleepless night, I just feel it coming on. There was an adorable lost dog in our neighborhood today, and I was walking Zoey (and I've just gotten her well from a virus or some such thing), and I got her back home quickly. I only had one leash with me at the time, and it was on Zoe, so I couldn't do anything else. Now I'm just sick at heart over this little guy (or girl), though. If you live in the vicinity of 62nd and Georgetown Road and see a small black and white dog, possibly a mix of cocker and terrier, please try and help this little soul!!!

Aw, Susan, we'll forgive you if you can't forgive yourself. Posting this note on IP is the best possible thing you could do !! Lots of loose dogs get found because of our super IP network!! xoxo Cherie

I've been in that situation before. I also felt guilty, but I do NOT have dogs that would "share" a leash, nor would I trust them to walk off leash. In each case, the dog was gone by the time I got back. I always hope they had just escaped for a few moments and got home safely.

Susan, we can only do what we can do. I have had to pass them by or leave them at times and it feels TERRIBLE. I'm sure that you would have helped if you had been in a different situation.

Oh trust me. I am the queen of guilty feelings. I wasn't raised by an Italian Catholic for nothing. I feel guilty about dogs running loose, ads I read on CL, etc. However, in my car I do keep a supply of treats and at least one slip lead at all times. I also usually have some sort of crate/carrier/pop up crate etc just in case. Since it was a small dog, I'm sure someone else took it in or its owner found it.

I'm smiling now at the "Catholic guilt" note, and here's hoping, too, that either the owner found that darling pup or that someone else took him/her in. Such a sweetie, and I wish I'd had an extra lead with me, but ...

I went through that today, too. There was this terrified Border Collie in the neighborhood today, but I couldn't get the slip leash on her (she was very skittish). Luckily, however, she was sticking to one yard, and I'm pretty sure it was her house. I'm keeping an eye out for her now, and have treats ready if she needs tempting.

You did the best you could by getting the word out about the dog. Thank you for caring!
