Puppy Ignorance

NosyRosie on Health - Fri, July 25 2008

Okay, I now have a few questions about puppy ownership and such. First of all, we found out from Tilly's vet visit last week that she has Giardia. We've been treating her and Maggie with Panacur C powder. I've noticed Tilly's poops have been on the runny side the past day or two. Cleaning up the soft serve has also been a treat. Her poops prior to treatment were soft but formed. Now it's just gross. Maggie's poops have been more or less her norm. I'm assuming that the Panacur will continue to cause loose stools as it kills the good bacteria in her gut? Hubby's getting some plain yogurt on his way home.

The other question I have is regarding puppy food/adult food. As far as we know Tilly is about 10 months. How long do we keep her on puppy food? She's thin and lean (could be the Giardia and whatever else she picked up in KY). I don't know what she was eating in her previous home but for the week she was in rescue she was eating Pedigree Puppy. Should I keep her on puppy food longer because I don't know her history and to bulk her up?

I had Giardia when my mom brought me home when I was a puppy. Giardia makes the poop runny and it appears like it has mucus in it...I know, it is gross. I took about a week to get over it but I had a powder AND a pill. I think the giardia make me slow to gain weight because once I got over it, Holy Moly! I grew! Good luck!

Yogurt will definitely help her with getting bacteria, but if she's still having loose stool, I would add some 100% canned pumpkin. It's a great source of natural fiber, and really works wonders on firming up stool.

For food, she doesn't have to stay on puppy food. For the most part, I don't think puppy food is necessary (the same goes for senior food). Depending on what brands you're considering switching to, it's probably an All Life Stages food. Canidae, Wellness (not CORE), Innova (not EVO), Nature's Variety (not Instinct), Fromms, Canine Caviar, and By Nature are all great ALS foods.

Giardia will cause them to be thin and have yucky poo. Sweetie and Cocoa both had it and we found out Dazyee picked it up earlier this year probably at the park. there is no need to feed her puppy food as long as you feed a high quality food. I would suggest the Canidae all life stages because it's great food, high calorie and has all the nutrients she needs. We fed that to our foster pups and the fosters and Chase are all on it now. Everybody's done well with it. Our dogs had Panacur, Fortiflora(to help the gut adjust) and Flagyl. You will also have to get a poop re-check her in a couple of weeks. We used to call Sweetie's poo the DQ Poo so I feel your pain. If you're concerned about her coat, you could add salmon oil or flaxseed oil to her food. I would also suggest the garlic and yeast pills as well. They help with the coat and fleas. My poor hubby gets frozen pizza while I fix these gourmet buffets for the dogs☺

Thanks guys. I completely forgot about the versatile canned pumpkin trick! (Makes good pumpkin pancakes when you've got leftovers). Oh and I have to go check out Missing Link stuff, too...

I was going to suggest the canned pumpkin also. Make sure it's not the pie filling, just 100% pumpkin.

That's the pill Lola was on, Flagyl. When you PMed me I couldn't think of it. I think you should call your vet about whether she should be on this in addition to Panacur. I don't think Panacur is meant for Giardia. I'm certainly no vet, but we went 2 rounds with Lola and those parasites. Flagy was the main treatment. You need the best meds to get rid of it and it's not easy....

Yeah, the Panacur for ours was for their hookworms they had. But Flagyl is the preferred treatment for Giardia. I investigated it alot at the beginning of this year since we had two cases within a month of each other.

That's what I thought. Lola was on Panacur as a precaution.. We want Miss Tilly to get rid of those bugs so she can come play!!

Starter gets pumpkin with every meal, since he's on his diet. He LOVES the stuff!! Trekkie has developed a taste for it, too. I feed the children Pro Pac lamb and rice, made in Evansville, no corn or wheat gluten. They both have very nice coats and are super healthy, plus there's usually at $2 off coupon in every bag.

Panacur is also a treatment option for Giardia. Initially the vet was concerned about worms of any type since she was from a questionable "rescue."
