I'm a backyard breeder

Debbie on Breeds - Fri, July 25 2008

I admit...I do have animals that are breeding. They're called guppies and I don't know what I'm going to do with all of them!!! We have a 20 gallon tank and it's over populated with these breeding machines. Our tank is clean but, oh my..

We don't have another tank to seperate them, so I guess we'll just keep having guppies! Does anyone want any?

Free to good home:
Unaltered, male and female guppies. Ready to breed and some that are already pregnant! Responsible breeders only need apply.

Mom says we'll pass. Thanks for the offer though!

They are great entertainment!! I think all cats should have guppies to watch.

You might try CraigsList and add a rehoming fee.

How do you tell the difference between a male and female guppy?

Alena on Jul 25 at 09:42 AM

Let me see....I've been wanting to get some fish, but just nothing major--something small to put in the living room to stare at once and while. I like guppies if they have pretty tails. Let me see what kind of aquarium stuff I have left over from past tanks....

P.S...male guppies and any other livebearing fish (means the fish has babies instead of laying eggs) have a bottom fin where the "penis" would be that is actually a copulatory organ, instead of a plain fin like a female....it actually sorta looks like a penis and they can move it around and stuff--and that's how they mate of course. Nice anatomy lesson, eh?

Debbie, I would have taken some of your guppies, but I just bought a beta for my little biorb baby tank. If I put those fish in with Poseidon, he would eat them. He's a monster. : xoxo D

I've just never understood the allure of fish.

They're so pretty and relaxing to watch- helps lower blood pressure, I guess. I have betas (two red and one blue crowntail), and I love em!

I may consider it. The only pets I can have when I move are fish, and I've been looking into a small tank and whatnot.

While the animals would LOVE to have fish, I'm afraid we're not in the market at this time.

But mom, you could put them in our pool so we have something to chase. You're such a spoil sport.

You crazy BYB. Why don't you have your guppies altered? Do you know how many homeless guppies die every day while you're breeding????? Ok, me neither but I always wanted to say something like that to people that have tons of cats or dogs breeding all the time. Thanks for letting me say it:-)

If anyone wants some very actively breeding platies let me know. I had five adults in my tank in my office. Now I have two adults and about 100 babies. This happened while I was on vacation. I don't know what happened to the other 3 adults. Their bodies are not in the tank. Kind of scary.

Would your daughter's school like to have some fishies? Surely some teacher out there would love to use this as a "birds and the bees" example......LOL

OMGosh that reminds me of a PetSmart story! When I was working there (holiday money!), a woman brought in a 5 gallon pail-- like the ones you get to mix paint in-- she wanted to sell back her goldfish to us, claiming she didn't want a tank anymore... Of course she did this on one of the icy snowy days, so we were all wondering how desperate she had to be to risk her personal safety & come in to the store to peddle fish! Needless to say, we did not take them- no telling where they'd been....

How bout a craigslist?

Or some little kids in your 'hood-- surely you can pawn them off on the kids! Their moms will never know what hit them......heehee!

Chances are pretty good that if anymore are born, they will get eaten because I'm not using the breeding tank. We'll just let nature take it's course. We seem to go through a cycle like this once a year. We just seem to have a whole lot of babies right now...

we have the same thing with our Brichardi. We got 4 to start -- 2 years ago - and now have well over 100... they keep breeding & breeding & breeding. Sometimes, they vote someone out of the tank & Roo finds him on the ground.

If Brichardi is anything like Bruschetta, I'm all for it multiplying. as a matter of fact, I'd take the extra Bruschetta off your hands. Yummy stuff.
