Grant County Animal Shelter

Sheri on Shopping - Thu, July 24 2008

my mom asked me to post this:

The Grant County Animal Shelter (in Marion, Indiana) has built a new facility. Any animals not adopted when they open the new and close the old the end of August will be killed. Dog Rescue organizations are stepping up and it appears that most of the dogs will be saved. Cats however do not have rescue organizations to help them. Right now, there are about 180 cats that will be killed. Realistically, there is no way all will be saved. If anyone is in the market for a cat/kitten, we ask that they go to the Grant Co Shelter. We are trying to save as many lives as possible.

So, Adopt a Cat! Go to Marion, Indiana, and make your choice. There are many to choose from and you will be saving a life.

From reading the news story on this, I thought the county was going to fund the old shelter for two months after the new shelter opened. If the new shelter opens in August, they should be funding the old one until October. Did that change? Not that the animals don't need to get out of there ASAP, I just want to know what's going on.

I've forwarded this information to several people. Wouldn't it be great if they could all get adopted??

I still don't understand why they are killing all the old animals and not taking any to their new shelter. If proper infection control and disinfection policies are in place, there should be no problem.

I don't get it either. They make it seem like the animals are so contaminated they would ruin the new facility!! In essence they're saying: we can't take these animals because we don't want to spread disease to the new facility, but you can take them into your home without any problems. I'm sorry, that's BS!!

If this is their philosophy , I don't know that the running of the new shelter will be particularly Humane either,it would be better to move the animals to the new facility and get rid of the old people !!. Do they really expect the public to forget all of the animals they killed and trust them with the new place ?It is bizarre.I have tried to email them and every address comes up not in service -

I saw the story on the news about this shelter and immediately went to their website and to Petfinder to see what they had, thought I might adopt however, they have very few pictures and little to no information about their dogs. Makes it hard to adopt when you really don't know what they have to offer. Kind of a long drive for us to make when we have no clue really of what to expect.
