Daisy went through a digging stage and then all of a sudden she stopped. I have no idea what to tell you.
I do want to say that your dogs are beautiful. My brother got the same breed dog this Spring. His pup, Bella, is wonderful.
Like I said Daisy did dig but stopped. Once in awhile she will try to dig a hole. Maybe this is just a stage they are going through. Do they have outside toys to play with?
I haven't tried this with Dolly yet, but I plan to since she is digging to get to the neighbor's yard. A vet told me once, if they are digging in a regular spot, to blow up a balloon, put it in the hole and fill it with loose dirt. Next time they dig, the balloon will pop and hopefully scare them. I'm not sure Dolly will be scared enough to quit, but I'm willing to try.
Thank you , I have never been around pointers before now . My husband wanted one and now we have two ! They are incredibly sweet . Gretchen is sassier but is about two. Heidi is only 10 months and is much quieter . I love them to death . They are incredibly active . I knew they would be, I did alot of research before we got them . My husband likes to walk up to 10 miles a day so he needed active but he travels all over the world (he is in Singapore today and Sydney later this week) so Mom has to bridge the gap with my stubby legs!
For digging I did read if you put a bit of their -ahem- pooh in the holes they regularly dig in they won't dig there anymore.
My best advice is to walk them at least twice a day to wear them out! Putting them out in the yard and letting them play does not accomplish the same thing as a focused walk does in terms of wearing them out. If a human is chasing them, they think that's a fun game. Dogs usually dig because they are bored, so I would not leave them outside by themselves for more than a few minutes without doing something focused with them, like playing ball. Since puppies sleep a lot (up to 20 hours per day)they should be good and tired and go inside in their crates or wherever they stay for a nap after that.
Okay, the balloon doesn't work. My problem is my lab mix puppy has a mutual love for my neighbor's puggles. They started digging on their side and she joined in on our side. I know I should have done this when they were inside, but I didn't. Everytime I put the balloon in the hole, the puggles popped it and didn't even jump. They just looked up at me as if to say "Get lost! That's our hole" So I filled it with dirt and sprayed bitter apple on it and stuck around for a minute to reinforce NO with them. As I look out the window they are circling the hole. I walk my puppy in the morning for about 30-45 minutes each morning and again for another 30 minutes at night. We go to training every Thursday night which wears both of us out. I'm not concerned about them getting to each other because they just want to play. But I am concerned about it becoming a habit for my dog to dig to get to wherever she wants to go. So if anyone has any tricks I'm up for it.
I have seen on "Its me or the dog". Get a kiddy wading pool or someting of the sort. Fill with sand. Bury toys or treats then let the dog find them. Do this for about a week and they will only dig in the sandbox.
