Where do children think pets go!

Sadie on Kids & Pets - Thu, July 24 2008

We talk all the time about educating people about pet shop pups and no kill shelters, But how many have educated their children and grand children where dogs go after they have tired of them? Today I was thinking about the time my daughter bought a rat terrier and after having it for a few about six months she decided that it was to much trouble for her and her kids so before she talked to me, she took it to HSI and told the kids someone else took it to care for it. when I found out I blew up like a hot balloon. So next time I had the kids I decided to take them on a tour of animal control and Morgan county humane society for a visit and when they said their dog went to someone else I couldn't help myself but to tell them where their dog really went, my daughter was upset but agreed she was wrong for lying to the kids and her actions. Maybe if people start educating kids early, many poor animals would not end up in a shelter. I will say after our visit my oldest grandson started helping us when we helped volunteer at Morgan county. Grandma's get in alot of trouble but we do mostly get our point across one way or another.

When my brother and I were growing up, my aunt used to take us to HSI regularly to play with the animals - walk them etc... She explained that these were waiting for their forever homes and she explained the importance of pet ownership. She always told us that until they found them it was our job to give them love and exercise and play with them. I was always very aware of pet responsibility thanks to her.

That is a great idea!!! If I had kids, I'd do that.

Not suprisingly she was (and still is) our "favorite aunt" :)
