What would you do?

Buster on Behavior - Mon, July 21 2008

When Mama takes me on my several daily walks we have begun to have problems with rude, mean spirited dogs rushing out of their yards, crossing the street, and circling around us bearing their teeth and barking. Some have even nipped my legs and tried to nip my nose. These are small dogs but I am a pacifist and I just stand there and Mama has tried standing still; she has tried telling them firmly to go home, and they just keep it up. I am afraid someday they are going to bite me or Mama and even a little bite can be bad. We don't want to use pepper spray, but we have talked to the owners and they are just "sorry" and then it happens again. Any ideas?

I feel your pain, I deal with such shananigans in my area. My major complaint is that people walk their dogs without leashes, then act annoyed when their dog runs up to mine. Hello!?!?

Yep, happens to us on our walks too. Last time, Ojo defended me and Mom until the owner came out. They say to lean into the dog to make them realize you mean business but it's hard to do with little yappers at your feet. Mom now carries a LOUD whistle to blow and tries to avoid the known dog locations. It's a real problem.

I would carry a whistle or a squirt bottle full of water. Something that an owner couldn't accuse you of trying to harm their dog with. People are so irresponsible it makes me weary.
