Wiggles Update

Rachael on Health - Fri, July 18 2008

It's taken me all day to write this post, because I've just calmed down enough to put my thoughts together coherently. At the moment, I'm so unbelievably frustrated with my vet's office that I don't know how I'm going to walk in there tomorrow to work. At least I'm resigning in August and won't have to worry about it much longer. And, on the why I'm so upset.

Wiggles went in today for a blood draw to check his liver and kidney levels, as well as his platelets and clotting factors. I know the clotting factors test is complicated, so I wasn't surprised that it had to be sent out. What did catch me off guard, and angered me, was that his routine blood work also mysteriously had to be sent out. This has never happened before, and they've done blood work on him numerous times. I wouldn't have been angry if someone had told me this beforehand, since the whole point of the appointment was to decide how much longer he needs to be on the vitamin K1, seeing as he runs out tomorrow. I would have scheduled his appointment earlier had I known the extra time was needed.

On top of this, the clinic had exactly two days worth of vitamin K1 pills left, which gets him through Monday. The vet nonchalantly said we can figure a game plan out Monday with the test results, which means that, no matter what, Wiggles will be going without vitamin K1 for some amount of time, while we wait for it to be shipped. He's got to be on it for at least three weeks.

What I hated was that no one seemed worried about my concerns. It was like his health wasn't important enough, and I do not appreciate that kind of attitude. Wiggles is fragile enough due to his age, without the added effects of the rat poison. All I know is, if his blood work comes back not normal, and the clinic doesn't get some more vitamin K1, I will not let them live it down.

Rachael, call Brookville Road Animal Hospital, ask for Dr. Jennifer Hicks. Call them first thing in the morning, tell them everything that is going on, and the emergency about the vitamin K1, hopefully they can help. They have NEVER, EVER, let me down, Dr. Canada, OR Dr. Hicks. You might even think of applying for a job there, if you will be looking soon. Dr. Hicks used to do your exact job, way back when she was in school, LOL. She is an awesome vet, I don't think Dr. Canada could ever get anyone as good as her there. Call me, or stop by Sams Club tomorrow, if you wanna talk, I'll be there from 11am till 3ish, depending on the weather. :)

Wow. Rachael, that must be really disappointing to be treated in such a cavalier fashion by people you work with and have trusted. I hope you are able to take Kelly's suggestion and call them tomorrow. Please keep us posted and know that we are thinking about you and Wiggles.

I'd be very angry, too. I hope this all works out well.

I hope everything works out. Hopefully you can get the vitamin K1 pills somewhere else and keep him on them. I hate it when I'm upset over something and someone else acts like it's no big deal. These are our babies!! It is a big deal!

Oooh, I'm sure your feel betrayed by those who you thought really cared! That's awful and I'm sorry they made you feel this way. I'd call around and make sure to get that vitamin K1. It's too important. Shame on that vet for acting like it isn't.

Well, there's bad news and good news today. The lady who works Saturdays found more vitamin K1, so Wiggles is set for three more weeks. It was right in the front of the cabinet, so I have no idea how anyone missed it.

The bad news is the company that gets outsourced blood work picked up everyone's but Wiggles' so he has to go in again Monday for a redraw. That means it'll take even longer for the results. Hopefully, the company gives us a discount or something, though, because they screwed up the whole thing.

Didn't something like that happen awhile back with Ojo or Roo? Can't remember if they got a discount. Glad they found more of the K1. Hope everything comes back OK.

Yes, it happened with Roo and her mama made it very well known that she was NOT happy that Roo had to be subjected to itching, more tests, etc because of their error.

I'll be doing the same when Wiggles goes back in on Monday. The company owes us an apology at the very least. Free blood work would be nice, however.

UPDATE: Wiggles goes in for his redraw tomorrow morning. IDEXX (the lab company) hasn't been able to get a hold of the courier yet, but I should be hearing from them sometime tomorrow, as well. Apparently, it's not the first time he's left blood work, so he better get reprimanded. Now that I've thought things over, I will be basically demanding that this lab work be done for free, because it's very important to his health and something that should not be taken lightly.

As for the clinic staff, I've expressed my concerns and moved on. I won't be working there much longer because of school, so I'm just going to tough out the next couple of weeks. Thanks for all of your support. I'm so glad you understand where I'm coming from.
