I've had some great luck with Missing Link. If you are a member of Best Friends and get their magazine, they have a free trial in it. I'll see if I still have it here somewhere. I bought a bag awhile back and have been using it on both the girls. Cocoa's tail hair finally re-grew on her bald spot and overall her coat is growing some. She almost has some shine to it now as well. Sweetie's coat has come back beautifully and it was crap quite literally. I'm not sure her ears will ever grow back but here's hoping. It's under $20 for a bag of it and I'm still using it. Pam from Wags told me it was the only thing that would re-grow hair on some of their really bad fosters. It contains some oil but you could also supplement with Flax seed oil and/or Salmon oil. That would help with the coat and add weight. I tried Ultra Oil but didn't seem to have much luck with it on Blitzen when I tried it.
My vet swears by fish oil. You can get the stuff from the vet but it's 10xs more expensive. Just get a bottle from the store, poke a hole in the pill with a pin and squirt it on her food. My cats hate it and won't eat their food if it's on there. Haven't tried on on the dogs. They get Ultra Oil and it really makes their fur beautiful. Good for joints too. I've also heard that melatonin is used for hair regrowth... I've no doubt that her diet and being outside had everything to go with her fur and skin. She's going to be a smokin' BFF before you know it!
We use Fish Oil. I've noticed he's less itchy and sheddy (sp?). I got a big bottle from Costco and just wrap it in a bit of cheese. He really likes the taste, so its a treat I use when i take him out to potty. He's pretty big, so I give him three capsules a day.
Charlie had a bunch of spots he would itch and bite at when we first got him. We switched his food to the Wellness blue bag (whitefish and sweet potato, i think). Within a couple weeks he wasn't scratching near as much and within a month most of his hair had grown back. I've heard good things on here about the Ultra and Fish oils. Also, Dr. Fosters and Smith have a line called Itch Stop with shampoo, lotion and spray to help stop the itchies. I think just switching her from Pedigree will make a difference. Good Luck!
I might have to give this a try. Buddy acts a little itchy, though he gets his monthly flea/tick etc treatments. He's also lost a little hair on his ears closest to his head. I noticed it shortly after he'd been rough housing with a neighbor dog. He's got a sensitive stomach so hopefully it won't mess with his system. Thanks for asking Rosie. I can cheat off your responses.
I'm going to cheat too ;0) ETB's always scratchin and doing the Frog crawl. And he also gets those little scab looking things too. I've got fish oil I take myself. I am assuming that's what type we can use. And if it helps shedding, Amen!!
When Ruby was still with us, every late spring through fall she'd get staff infections with little scabby bumps and she'd itch like crazy. The vet would put her on a round of steroids (ick) and antibiotics. She'd also rub the hair off her ears. One of my cardi raising friends suggested that I try bathing her in Malaseb shampoo (from the vet) and give her Pau D'Arco, which is a holistic deal from tree bark in Brazil. I think I gave her 250 mg everyday (she weighed 70 lbs, so it could have been more). It helped tremendously and last fall was the first fall in years that she didn't scratch herself into oblivion. If you want more info, I can find out the dosages. I also took her off anything that had chicken and corn in it and fed her only lamb and rice, which helped.
We had some of the same issues with Maggs. She had spotty fur on her head, looked like small patches were missing. She also peed ALL THE TIME. She couldn't hold her pee or other for that matter in her crate for more than an hour or two. The vet kept an eye in her fur and she eventually (not long ago, ahha) outgrew the excessive peeing (except for the nervous stuff). We keep both our dogs on Iams, Maggs gets active puppy or something and Riggs gets "fluffy" dog type for a slimming effect, LOL. I never believed that food made that much of a difference until the bassets. We had Riggs on a cheaper brand when we got him and he shed like nothing I've ever seen (and I lived with a Rottie and a Pug once). The food made all the difference in the world - keeps them both shiny and soft (maggs - soft like a bunny!). I would def. take her to have her incision looked at though.
