Because I'm the "animal lady"?

dreya on Activities - Mon, July 14 2008

That's what she said.

Last night around 9:30pm, I heard a tapping at my chamber door. Tis some visitor, I muttered. :)

Anyway, it was a neighbor lady saying that they had found a baby kitten under their porch. She said she couldn't take it anywhere and that her outside dogs would either kill it or her husband was going to take it out in the field and "hope it catches some mice". Then she said, "don't feel obligated to take it". Whatever. This little kitty was less than four weeks old. It had no teeth, I think it would be difficult to gum a mouse.

She said she knew I was the "animal lady" and liked animals. I've only talked to her a couple times but I had told her I foster and have cats and dogs.

She went home and got the kitten. He was tiny. Maybe a pound or so. One of his eyes was shut and kind of goopy. I put him in a crate with a blanky and a saltines box he could crawl in. I put him in the room off our kitchen because it has a door that I could close so the other animals wouldn't get anywhere near him. I put a little wellness kitten canned food in there and he licked at it a little. He cried for a while and then settled down. I took a shower and changed before I did anything. I didn't want to chance anything passing to any of my furbabies.

I took him to Greenfield Animal Management this morning. They said they were going to get him to someone who could take care of him and get him all better. Hopefully, he finds a wonderful home.

Last night, Josh was like "no way!, we just got a rescue kitty on Saturday!" I promised him I didn't want to keep the kitty, just make sure he didn't get attacked by dogs or tossed in a field or whatever. He was so small, there's no way he would have survived. The neighbor said they hadn't seen the mama cat for days.

So the little guy is probably sippin on a bottle of yummy kitty nectar right now! I put a note in the neighbor's mailbox letting them know where I took him.

Quoth my husband, nevermore!

:)

:) I think we all need that medal! That's why I love indypaws, we're all the "animal lady (or dude)"!

Dreya, that's a great thing to be known as! I agree with Diane, you get crowned the Animal Lady of the day!

Funny how that happens, isn't it? one of the girls at work had newborn pups dropped on her porch last year because they knew she liked dogs. Uh yeah, but what are you going to do with newborn pups and no mom?

Oh, I forgot to mention that's how Sweetie came here. The rescue in Evansville knew we liked Doxies so they asked if we could take her. I got a phone call this AM from a stranger with a dog barking loudly in the background. I couldn't understand the message but got her name and # from the caller ID and called her back. She had gotten my info from our "back up" vet Dr T because she had 2 Doxies that needed boarding. she didn't realize that the kennel required bordatella at least 48 hours in advance(she thought the one they got last year was ok but it was supposedly only good for 6 months). They gave her my # and said I might dog sit for her. I would have except I was on my way to work and her plane left at 3 this afternoon! I felt bad for her since her hubby was out of town as well but she seemed to think she had another option that wouldn't be as great for the dogs. She said she'd keep my # though. that's also how my sister ended up with Peyton the beagle. A phone call on Christmas Eve-I heard you take in dogs. Funny how word gets around!

"Animal Lady" is such an awesome title. It's right up there with mommy in my book!

I can relate. I have people leaving notes on my door asking me to help them find their pets. And I HAVE to oblige. It's a tough job but someone has to do it.

I have a stamp on my forehead that says "sucker for misplaced animal"

I agree with Amadeus! I must have a neon sign above the house that signals all of the strays.

The downside about being known as the Animal Lady is that you end up taking in all these animals because no one else will take responsibility. I now keep kitty litter, cat food and dog food in my office as people call and say, "Connie, there is a cat in the alley." or "Connie, we just saw a dog running loose on the highway." I raised some baby birds once and told absolutely no one as I didn't want to start getting calls about those. Last night a friend of a friend called to see if I had a live trap and to tell me a sad story about their dogs killing a kitten that wandered into the yard. But, she thinks there are more kittens and wants to try and get them before the dogs.

I'm now thinking I should go and buy my own live trap. This is the third person to ask if I had one.
