Oh, I forgot to mention that's how Sweetie came here. The rescue in Evansville knew we liked Doxies so they asked if we could take her. I got a phone call this AM from a stranger with a dog barking loudly in the background. I couldn't understand the message but got her name and # from the caller ID and called her back. She had gotten my info from our "back up" vet Dr T because she had 2 Doxies that needed boarding. she didn't realize that the kennel required bordatella at least 48 hours in advance(she thought the one they got last year was ok but it was supposedly only good for 6 months). They gave her my # and said I might dog sit for her. I would have except I was on my way to work and her plane left at 3 this afternoon! I felt bad for her since her hubby was out of town as well but she seemed to think she had another option that wouldn't be as great for the dogs. She said she'd keep my # though. that's also how my sister ended up with Peyton the beagle. A phone call on Christmas Eve-I heard you take in dogs. Funny how word gets around!
The downside about being known as the Animal Lady is that you end up taking in all these animals because no one else will take responsibility. I now keep kitty litter, cat food and dog food in my office as people call and say, "Connie, there is a cat in the alley." or "Connie, we just saw a dog running loose on the highway." I raised some baby birds once and told absolutely no one as I didn't want to start getting calls about those. Last night a friend of a friend called to see if I had a live trap and to tell me a sad story about their dogs killing a kitten that wandered into the yard. But, she thinks there are more kittens and wants to try and get them before the dogs.
I'm now thinking I should go and buy my own live trap. This is the third person to ask if I had one.
