My poor Liv

dreya on Health - Wed, July 09 2008

Olivia had her spay done yesterday. I went to pick her up and was watching all the other dogs come out and meet their family. They were jumping and excited. Then I get up to the front of the line and tell them I'm there for Olivia. They bring her out and she's slinking out the door. She looked like she felt like poo. No jumping or excitement. I felt so bad for my baby!

The proceed to tell me they had to give her a penicillin shot and are sending me home with antibiotics because she had pyometra!! Her uterus was infected. They said it hadn't gotten that bad; that the infection was like little corkscrews coming out of her uterus. They said they can get as big as sausages but hers hadn't gotten that bad. They also said she had a false pregnancy! My little one! I can tell she feels punk. She's pretty much down for the count. She had some ice chips last night and drank a little water at 10:30pm or so. She had a few bits of kibble this morning, then she was over it. I gave her some more about 10 minutes ago and she ate it. She has been very snappy at Penelope and Charlie. Olivia and I slept in the living room and Charlie, Penelope and the hubby slept in the bedroom.

I just feel so bad for her cause I can tell how bad she feels. Hopefully she will feel a little better tomorrow.

Oh, poor Olivia! It sounds like she's had a rough time the past day and a half. We'll say our puppy prayers and let us know if there's anything we can do. We'd offer to come play with her, but something tells me she wouldn't be up for that.

Oh, and Mom wants to know...what's a false pregnancy?

Poor Olivia! I'm sure she'll feel OK after a day or two and at least she's taking it easy and you don't have to worry about her being too active!

We'll keep our fingers (and paws) crossed that she feels better tomorrow!!

Oh, and our mom wants to know what a false pregnancy is too!!

I guess their body thinks they are pregnant. Their mammary glands start to swell and they "act" like they are pregnant. Trying to nurse things, like shoes or whatever. Olivia never did this, I think we got her in before she got too far. Her little nips were starting to swell, but not real big. I guess with a false pregnancy their nips can get huge, and start producing milk. With that and her infection I am so thankful we got her in when we did.

They said at FACE that pit bulls were "notorious" for having false pregnancies.

My cocker had a False Pregnancy. She had swelling of her belly, her glands and everything (but only on one side). She was producing milk too. She would be VERY upset if you took any of her squeaking toys and made them squeak. She carried them around as if they were her puppies. Now with her, they would not do her spay until her swelling had gone down quite a bit so we had to live thru her false pregnancy for a long time. It was horrible. Think about having your cycle for months straight! She was miserable and made us miserable with her whinning / crying / odd behavior.

I hope Liv feels better soon! Each day she'll get a little better. Encourage rest & the other ones to leave her be as much as possible.

Honestly, the way that Titus trys to mother every puppy or kitten that he's around makes me wonder if male dogs can experience something like a false pregnancy.

Poor Liv! I hope you feel better ASAP!! We're sorry to hear about all the problems. It is a good thing you got in there when you did! Mom says it's hard to see your baby sick, so she is sympathizing! When Bev got her tooth pulled, she didn't feel well. Mom made me leave her alone.

Aw, poor Olivia! Pyometra is not to be messed around with, so I'm glad it got caught early. Good luck with her. She's in my thoughts.

Poor Olivia! I hope she is getting lots of rest and pain meds. My Border Terrier had a false pregnancy once after I bred her. She was pretty intense about it, even letting one of our kittens nurse!

Thank you guys SO much! She is feeling better today. She woke me up this morning; tail wagging! She's still slow going, which is okay cause it's easier to keep her down. Charlie and PNell have been doing good with her. I had to crate Charlie a couple times yesterday cause he just wanted to play with her, but she wasn't up to it. She passed a small blood clot yesterday, I called FACE and they said that would be expected with what she had gone through. She hasn't passed anymore, just that one. Again, thank you guys for your thoughts and prayers. They worked FAST! :)
