I guess their body thinks they are pregnant. Their mammary glands start to swell and they "act" like they are pregnant. Trying to nurse things, like shoes or whatever. Olivia never did this, I think we got her in before she got too far. Her little nips were starting to swell, but not real big. I guess with a false pregnancy their nips can get huge, and start producing milk. With that and her infection I am so thankful we got her in when we did.
They said at FACE that pit bulls were "notorious" for having false pregnancies.
My cocker had a False Pregnancy. She had swelling of her belly, her glands and everything (but only on one side). She was producing milk too. She would be VERY upset if you took any of her squeaking toys and made them squeak. She carried them around as if they were her puppies. Now with her, they would not do her spay until her swelling had gone down quite a bit so we had to live thru her false pregnancy for a long time. It was horrible. Think about having your cycle for months straight! She was miserable and made us miserable with her whinning / crying / odd behavior.
I hope Liv feels better soon! Each day she'll get a little better. Encourage rest & the other ones to leave her be as much as possible.
Thank you guys SO much! She is feeling better today. She woke me up this morning; tail wagging! She's still slow going, which is okay cause it's easier to keep her down. Charlie and PNell have been doing good with her. I had to crate Charlie a couple times yesterday cause he just wanted to play with her, but she wasn't up to it. She passed a small blood clot yesterday, I called FACE and they said that would be expected with what she had gone through. She hasn't passed anymore, just that one. Again, thank you guys for your thoughts and prayers. They worked FAST! :)
yay! we're so glad olivia is feeling better!
