Foster Kitty Update

Stacy on Activities - Mon, July 07 2008

I had to take one of my kittens (Kingsley) back to the shelter on Saturday because his eyes were swollen, and he was sicker than the others. I wanted to have him looked at because he wasn't active at all. He was a bit dehydrated, so they gave him some fluids and also some eye ointment and let me take him back home. I was able to get some liquid meds and give the pills back too! Now, everyone gets a squirt of meds and eye ointment in both eyes morning and night.

They also gave me a few cans of food and told me to try feeding that as well as the dry. I had bought some and couldn't get them to eat it. I also bought some chicken baby food like Catherder suggested. I actually mixed the baby food, canned food and some warm water together. That is a hit! Kingsley wouldn't eat it though, so I put some in a syringe and gave him a few squirts. I didn't give him a lot, but I wanted to make sure he was eating. They always have dry food out, but I hadn't seen him eat much.

I'm happy to report this morning, Kingsley was scarfing down the dry food for breakfast. He ate quite a bit. His eyes aren't nearly as swollen. The best part - he played with toys and the other kittens! He seems like he feels much better! I'm so relieved!

As for my shy kitten (Flounder), he is a little wild cat. He won't come up to me, even with the canned food mixture. When I catch him to give him his meds, he'll tolerate a few pets when I'm finished. He really just prefers to play with the other kittens though. I don't think he's ever going to be a lap cat.

Aw...you need to start a book...The Chronicals of the Kitty Adventures! I'm so glad those kitties have you. :-)

Liquid meds are much easier, aren't they? Glad Kingsley is feeling much better. When I first started reading about him, it reminded me of how a kitty in one of our litters was acting right before he died. We actually lost all but 1 of that litter. Those were the only kittens we have ever lost at it sucks. Anyway, like I said..I'm glad Kingsley is feeling better!

We're glad the kids are feeling better! Kingsley sounds like a trooper. Flounder sounds like me. I am so not a lap cat. I don't even like being picked up. I'm an independent woman.

Yor adventures sound just like what we went through with our foster babies. Our little sick one had such a terrible eye infection form his URI that the vet thought it had errupted in it's socket. He couldn't open it it was stuck shut. He was almost euthanized... BUT the little stinker and the others got new meds and he recovered!! I think the kittens are stronger than we givem them credit for sometimes. You're doing a great job with them, they're going to be great family furkids!!

Been through that before! Feeding sick babies via syringe is no fun.

While they can get so sick so fast (much faster than adult cats), they also seem to be able to bounce back just as quickly.

As for handling the wild-man... try picking him up and holding his back to your chest (so that he's not looking at you) just briefly, then let him go. Repeat from time to time. It may help him associate you with something warm and nice instead of staring up and a big scary thing that has him captured. Worked for Theodore (Alvin's brother)!

I sympathise with your stories on eye meds. My house had this problem earlier this year. Aden has feline herpes upper respiratory infection, and when they were stressed over Christmas he gave it to Kiernan in one eye. Kiernan gave it back to Aden in one eye ho have it back to Kiernan in the other eye. It was a mess as I am sure you can imagine! At least they are well behaved cats.

I'm glad that the babies are feeling better. What I'm dying to know is what the girls think of the kittens? If Minnie is anything like Titus she's trying to mother them.

I haven't let the girls see the kittens. I have the kittens in a huge dog crate in the basement bathroom. The girls stay upstairs with me. I crate the girls when I let the kittens out to play. It has worked out really well so far. After about 30 minutes or an hour of running around and playing, the kittens are ready to nap anyway, so the girls aren't crated too long.

Glad to hear things are going better with the kittens...I bet they are a handful. You're definitely an angel to take on that responsibility......maybe if I was younger.....probably not.
