Redirected aggression

Amanda on Behavior - Sat, July 05 2008

I just heard the saddest story this weekend. Two of our friends have these sister cats who used to be best friends. It all changed when the neighbor dog was in the yard and one cat Anna snuck up on the other Nala. Anna turned and attacked Nala. Ever since then Anna has redirected all her aggression and frustration to Nala. My friends have been working on behavior modification and so far it seems to be working Anna is getting less unpredictable to Nala, and Nala is standing up for herself. The really strange thing is that they still will curl up and sleep together. So I guess this is not as rare a thing as I had thought.

Been there, doing that. Sorry to hear this and we totally understand the fright & frustration. Ojo and I lived as best friends for 2.5 years without a single incident until one day - BAM.

Sometimes, when I am walking with Petey and Abby and we come across another dog ... Abby gets bent out of shape and redirects her aggression at Petey. It can be quite frustrating. Then, we had an issue this evening ... Petey and Abby wanted the same bone and Abby started to attack poor Petey. It doesn't happen all the time, but it is so aggravating when they really get mean with one another.
