Advice for a shy kitten

Stacy on Behavior - Thu, July 03 2008

One of my fosters likes to play with the other kittens, but he shys away from people. I want to get him to be a little more social but don't want to scare him in the process. I've been trying to pet him here and there but not be too forward with him. Does anyone have any advice on how to bring this little guy out of his shell? I've never dealt with a shy kitten. All the ones I've been around will jump right in your lap.

Try to get some one-on-one time with the kitten. Then gradually introduce him to the others.

dip your finger in can tuna juice and then show it to him but don't directly watch his face.

Gerber Chicken Dinner! Stage 1 I believe (ingredients are ground up chicken, starch and water *NO* veggies). I've yet to have a foster kitten to refuse it.

*Note, NOT to be used as a food source, but as a treat/bribe since it doesn't have all the nutrients as a regular cat food would.

What I did with the feral kittens I had was put a small blob in a bowl and put it near them, but not so close that they're spooked. Then I move away, allowing them to approach when they're ready. Then I put another small blob into the bowl and move away, but not as far... and so on. Getting them to associate me with yummies.

Once they're eating with me right next to the bowl, I'll dip a spoon into it and start having them lick it off the spoon... moving towards petting them gently as they're lapping off the treat.

Kittens usually warm up pretty fast compared to shy adults, especially if something really yummy is involved. Key is being patient and not rushing him so that he associates people with good things.

None of my foster kittens or cat were shy at all. Is he sicker than the others? I'd go for the yummy bribes. They love all of that stinky food.
