Property Taxes!

CatHerder on My Blog - Thu, July 03 2008

Wheeeeeeeeeee! I'm so confused.

Here's the story (short version):

Never received a tax bill last year. Received a tax statement from IN in Feb. for my income purposes, gave a certain amount "A" that I had paid.

Later received another tax statement (in May) saying I'd paid a certain amount, but the bill was actually amount "B" and I'd only paid amount "C".

The difference between A and B is $50, so in theory I still owe $50 according to those two statements. The difference between B and C is $100, so according to those... I still owe $100.

BUT WAIT!! It gets better.

Today I received a tax refund for $84 as if I'd overpaid my property taxes (aka amount "D"). It seems that the right hand has no idea what the left hand is doing...

*rolls eyes*

What next? The refund is likely going to vet bills. Rah. Nothing fun.

You gotta love this property tax system...no body knows what is going on.

Well, at least you're getting a refund, I just got a letter saying "This is not a bill" but apparently when we paid our property taxes back in the fall, the amount due back then is different from the amount due now, because we owe an extra $353 by July 10th. I'm totally new to this county's tax problems and it's making me wish I had bought in a different county/city.

I'm not sure, but I think it's the same way throughout Indiana. It's a statewide problem although some areas were affected more than others. I just bought my home in March and was in an apartment prior to that, so I don't have any real experience with property taxes or anything.

This is my first go at home-ownership too. There are times that I wonder if I knew then what I know NOW about the whole process... would I have still left the rental world?

I thought I owed! The "This is not a Bill" notice said I still owed the $100, but my 1098 (I think that's the form, too lazy to actually look for it right now) gave a figure that would have me owing the $50. Imagine my surprise when I got the REFUND.

I'm so confused. My brain hurts.

The whole things a mess. I received a notice saying I owed ~$25. However, I just received checks totalling more than that. Go fig.
