Need help with sick rat!

Rachel on Health - Wed, July 02 2008

My 8 month old rat, Lenny (see his profile!) has become sick with a respiratory infection. I am currently without a job and money is EXTREMELY tight. A lot of regular vets won't see rats, and I simply cannot afford to take him to a fancy exotics clinic to have him checked out. The appointment would be upwards of $70 (the medicine apparently only costs about $12), and I just don't have that right now.

Does anyone know of an AFFORDABLE vet in the Greenfield area who can treat a rat with a respiratory infection for a more reasonable price? Lenny means the world to me and I don't want him to suffer. I'm open to ANY suggestions of how I can get help for my little guy!!

I don't know of any in Greenfield, but FACE, which is just east of downtown Indy sells Clavamox for about $9 and that generally cures an URI. Now I don't think they see any pets but cats and dogs, but you could give them a call and explain the situation. Doesn't hurt to try, right? Anyway, I hope Lenny feels better soon : )

Pet Supplies Plus hosts something called Wellness clinics. The vet offers discounted vaccines and medications. There used to be a link on the PSP website for more information on the clinic times, fees, etc. They treated Izzy for a URI.

Thanks for the help. I was able to get him checked out and on some antibiotics for an affordable price, thank goodness! He should be good as new in a week or two!
