I got that email too. I responded and let them know I would foster, but would have to see how Minnie does. I also told them my basement is finished with a bedroom I never use. I could convert it into a cat room! I don't think my girls would get along with a cat, so to be safe the cats couldn't roam the house. I would play with them for a while in the evening, but I don't know if that is good enough. I'll see what they say. Keep your fingers crossed for me!! I may get to be a foster mom!
I really love their shelter. I was so impressed at how clean it was! I think I'm going to volunteer there. Bev's dad is even thinking about joining me to walk the dogs on Saturdays! I still have to fill out an app and go to the orientation. I feel like I could be dedicated to them. Sometimes, you volunteer and feel like you're swimming against the tide because the overall management of the place is just screwed up. It's hard to donate time and money to an organization when you don't agree with the management and policies of it.
If they are anything like our Humane Society, the basement room will be just fine. When we foster kittens they are segregated into our master bath and they do just fine as long as you go in and spend time with them.
That's what I thought too. I'm thinking scratching posts, a couple of those multi-tiered cat trees to play on, a bunch of toys, that can't be too bad. There's even two small windows in the room. If I put the cat trees under them, they could probably jump up and lay on the sills to look outside.
Just keep a baby gate at the basement door to be sure to keep the dogs out, and cats in... they can be sneaky!
As for an inexpensive place to get posts and cat trees, try http://www.yugisoft.com/ there's even a feature on that site for them to donate a part of the proceeds to your favorite shelter.
I just went to their site & sent an email to see about fostering the beagle mix that they have. I doubt that I'm an ideal candidate since I work full time but we'll see. I did tell them I'd have to be sure he'd get along w/ Buddy. I've never fostered before & my dear basset is used to being an only child. He does love to play though...Guess we'll see what happens.
You might be suprised. Both my husband and I work full time and are gone for almost 10hrs a day and yet our shelter is ALWAYS calling us to foster dogs and puppies. If you are showing interest, have other well cared for animals and are willing to help them out, they just might take it! Good Luck! I REALLY enjoy fostering.
The dog I inquired about has already been fostered. I didn't realize he had kennel cough so it's for the best. Hopefully the little guy will get better soon. They asked me to consider taking in a sick cat. Can cat's give their ailments to dogs?
As long as you keep a sick cat in a separate room from your dog as well as use good hand washing techniques for yourself there shouldn't be a problem caring for a sick cat. They need a clean, quiet place. Regular feeding, probably meds given, clean litter boxes. It's very rewarding to be able to help these kitties.
We've taken on several sick cats/kittens before and like Diane said, as long as they are separated and you wash your hands after handling them Buddy should be fine. We were more concerned about the fact that we had 2 very elderly cats of our own but they survived many a litter of foster kittens. Good luck! I think you should give it a try.
