Melatonin for Spooky dogs

Sheila on Health - Tue, July 01 2008

A very nice lady told mom to try giving me Melatonin (3 milligrams for a 45 lb dog) when I get spooky. This stuff has changed my life! I no longer shut down, and it doesn't make me loopy. I still get pretty scared during storms, but this really has taken the edge off, and I can at least function. Mom just started giving it to Charlie, too. Since she just adjusted his training, she can't be certain which is helping more, but he's much less barky. This seems to help some dogs more than others so your mileage may vary.

That's great, Sheila! We're glad you don't get spooked as bad. I've thought about giving something to Charlie on the 4th. He does pretty good during thunderstorms but fireworks scare him, badly. He's about 54 lbs. Should I give him 3.5 or 4 mgs? Would you ask your Mama for me, Sheila? Thanks!

(i think i've seen them in 3 and 5 mg., which one do you have?)

Mom said you really can't OD on this stuff, so you might want to go to 4 mgs.

I really hope it helps you Charlie. Being scared is no fun at all!

I have used both Pet Eeze and Rescue Remedy with excellent results as well. As a matter of fact, that's what started the whole "Officer Chase does drugs" post by Sweetie. I was giving him some Pet eeze because of all the fireworks. They are both all natural as well with no side effects that I've ever noticed with any of my dogs.

I take two 3mg Melatonin tablets daily, it started out for helping regrow hair. (I had a few bald patches, a type of alopecia in dogs) It really worked, because after a few months on it, my hair grew back in. So I get it daily, but Mom does up my dose during storms and fireworks. Oddly enough, I'm not acting all scared of the fireworks so far this year. Could I have possibly grown out of it??? Very weird, I was a complete chicken last year! Mom did put the Ttouch wrap on me, as well as giving Melatonin and RR, so maybe going through all the scary storms has desensitized me of the fireworks? Hope so!

Mom sneaks some of that Quiet Moments onto my food when I get spooked. I know the "cheese secret" and lick around the pill but Mom discovered you can grind it in your fingers to a powder to sprinkle over wet food & dogs never know it. Sneaky, that Mom of mine.

I've tried the Pet-Eze with both of mine. They don't seem to respond to the camomile (base ingredient) very much. I think, like a lot of this type of remedy, each animal reacts differently to each one.

I, personally take it at night to help me sleep, just one 3mg tablet. Love it! I never thought of it for the dogs, but why not?!

Thanks for posting this. This might be just what we need. Carolina has been very agitated tonight bc of some fireworks off in the distance. It took me a while to figure out what was bothering her bc I didn't hear them, they are that distant.

Our GSD dog was about 70 lbs and we used to give her one 5 mg pill and it was fantastic. She would freak out during the 4th - shaking and just being miserable. The melatonin took the edge off and let her relax a bit. She was still hyper alert, but could at least lay down and chew on a chew toy.

We've seen pet-eeze at the Petsmart, but where do you get the melatonin or the rescue remedy?

The melatonin we would get at the drugstore or GNC. It is like fish oil - you can use the human stuff with dogs.

The other stuff I have seen at PSP and Petsmart. We don't shop at Petco, but I'm sure they have it there too.
