I second the tummy issues.. i made the mistake of giving Nigel a PB kong to eat on his first big ride (3 1/2 hours) up to michigan a few weeks ago and we had to stop so he could have some explosive diarrhea :) This time, no "edible" treats/chews for him and I probably won't feed him until we get to our destination.
Make sure that her tags have your cell phone number and not just a home land line. If she would get separated from you you would want someone to be able to get ahold of you immediately. Take copies of her shot records with you. Make frequent stops for pottying and exercising. I also have started using a sunshade when the girls ride in their seatbelts instead of their crates. It tells you when the car is too hot to leave the dog in it in addition to blocking harmful rays from the sun. I also take the girls' lighted collars so I can see them at night. Make sure you have plenty of her food in case you would not be able to get it on the road. Sounds like you guys are going to have a fun time!
When we took Daisy to the Grand Canyon, water was the most important thing to us. It was very hot so we offered it to her quite often. Plus she didn't want to eat very much. I hand fed her to get her to eat. After awhile she ate on her own.
In our case each state had a different smell so she was confused. Once we got back to the Indiana border and she recognized the good old Indiana grass, she became a wild dog...she knew she was back home.
I love to travel with Daisy.
She is wonderful and I'm sure your Zoe will be too. Oh! I really kept Daisy away from other dogs. I did this because if another dog would have attacked her, I was at the mercy of a stranger...another vet in another state.
Enjoy your trip and let us know how things went.
We are very excited for our trip. We are driving to South Carolina to my dad's and then on to Georgia for our family reunion for a few days. We will be staying with my dad and then in a dog friendly cabin in the mountains of Georgia. All of my family are dog lovers so I think we will have a good time. I am excited to introduce Zoe to the other side of our family!! I have checked around the town we are staying in in Georgia and there seems to be quite a few pet friendly areas. This will be the first vacation that I have taken that I will be able to take my baby with me!!
Have a great time and be careful! After all, Francie and Zoe still need to get together and play. :-)
Yes, they do need to get together to play. I have been so busy planning my sister's wedding, showers, bachelorette party, etc, Zoe has been a little neglected. We haven't been out much!! I promise to make it up to her starting the day after the wedding!!! Poor thing hasn't even been to a pet store in at least a month!!! She definitely deserves some play dates!
We stayed in dog friendly motels while we were on the road. Once we got out West, we set our camper up.
All the motel people were very nice to those with dogs.
Staying in a cabin in the mountains sounds very exciting. You make me jealous. Your trip brings back so many memories of our trip. When we went out West, we only had Daisy for a few months. We adopted her in May and vacationed in July. She probably thought we were crazy and wondered what she got herself into. It was one of my favorite vacations. We learned so much about each other.
My mommy & daddy took me on a trip to Kansas to see my human aunt & nephew. They packed plenty of food & water for me and stopped at every rest area so I wouldn't be in my travel crate for the entire trip. Mommy says you need to make sure to take plenty of time and to be careful. Have a safe trip Zoe.
Carolina & I have a road trip in about 3 weeks to Virginia. We're going to welcome my new nephew in Fairfax, be in my college rommate's wedding in Richmond, and visit some friends in between. So all these suggestions and tips will come in handy for us, too!
We are looking at about 11 hours on the road, so we are leaving super early in the A.M. to avoid driving at night. I find it's easier to start the drive while it's still a little dark and get to my destination during daylight rather than start mid-morning and arrive at my destination at night...Driving the last part of an 11 hour drive at night, is NOT fun and more than a little creepy.
Stay save on your trip Zoe & Jenna! Take lots of pictures! We'll see you all back on IP after our respective road trips.
We just got back from our trip and it was wonderful. Zoe travelled like a pro. We had no stomach issues or anything. We had a great time and Zoe enjoyed meeting a whole other side of our family. She even got to see deer and frogs up close. She didn't care for the frogs!! Thanks for all your trip tips!!!
