I about lost one...

Kris on Activities - Mon, June 30 2008

I have finally calmed down enough to blog about this incidence and share a lesson I learned. I took Deuce, Francie and Penny for a walk through the neighborhood yesterday early evening. Deuce has a retractable leash, but the girls don't. We were close to the end of the walk and I was bending down cleaning up after one of the dogs so I was distracted. Deuce was out about 12 feet ahead on his leash but still on the sidewalk. Here comes this big SUV driving a little too fast for the neighborhood and Deuce decides that he's going to chase the SUV. Before I even knew what was happening, I look up and Deuce is out in the street...it's like he anticipated the SUV coming toward us and ran to meet it. I swear to God, the back tires of that SUV missed him by a whisper. I screamed as I just watched it all happen in slow motion. It still makes me sick to think about what almost happened. Somehow I managed to get us back to the house where I sat down and hugged/cried on that dumb car-chasing dog for awhile.

Tonight, I'm going to buy a leash and get rid of the retractable leash. I won't be using the retractables again. I learned my lesson. Thanks for letting me unload that. I feel better but still guilty for using that stupid retractable leash to start with.

I have never liked those retactable leashes. I've never felt comfortable putting my big dogs on one even though I know of people who use them with their big guys. Anyway, I think I would have TOTALLY freaked out and had a heart attack. Thank dog Deuce is okay. Give him an extra hug from us and tell him not to chase cars anymore!

I don't like the retractable leashes either. I started Zoe on one when she was little, but then changed to a regular leash. You get much more control with a regular leash.

My hubby loves them but I hate them! They limit your control over the dog and it doesn't help teach them any manners. He doesn't get what the problem is. I always make him put the "hard" leashes on when we walk unless we're going to the park. Then I might allow the retractables so they can go along and sniff. Otherwise, I hate them! You have so little control with them and usually I see people walking their dogs letting them go all over other people's yards. And I would really be scared to have a big dog on one.

I'm glad Deuce is ok! Your experience is exactly why I don't have Charlie on a retractable leash. I've never felt that they offer any kind of control although my neighbor swears otherwise. She's got a Lhasa that minds just about as well as Charlie- LOL. I'll stick with the hard leash! Being a herding dog, Charlie LOVES to go after cars (only if he knows the driver-- weird, huh?) and the hard leash is the best way to guide him over to the side of the road. I make him stand still as cars pass us- he's pretty good at it but once in a while he goes after the car anyway.... Thanks for sharing your story!! I think that calls for a margarita or something--

Sweet little Deucey!! We're so glad you're ok. That had to have been one of the scariest moments of your life. I use retractable leashes when I have only one dog to control. I like them because the dogs can run more on walkies but I have to more aware of what is going on around us and be one step ahead of what they might see. For relaxing walks, we use regular leashes.

No retractables here, either. We wander too much and like to sniff stuff. Plus, mama has gotten a couple of "leash burns" when we decide to take off. Maybe if there was only one of us, but retractables are too difficult to handle when there is more than one dog and only one leash holder. So, we have 6 footers and that's about it.

I've gotten rid of our retractable leash, too. If I want to give them a lot of freedom, say at a park, I get out their long lines. 100% cotton, and no burns. Otherwise, its 6 ft. leather leashes for us!

OMG! How scary! I don't like retractable leashes for my girls because they pull on a normal leash. I couldn't maintain any type of control with a retractable one. I probably wouldn't have thought much about using one on a small dog like Deuce though. I'm glad you shared. Even if I have a small dog in the future, I won't use one! I'm really glad Deuce is OK!

I'd be terrified that Gunner would break one of those retractable leases (or one of my hands), with the way he pulls and chases things on walks. Thank goodness Deuce and everyone else is okay!

We're happy that Deuce and YOU are ok! That would be frightening! But also thanks for sharing this story to others. We have never used retracting leashes for multiple reasons but it's great that you enlightening how a slip of a moment could be disasterous. Glad you all are OK

I am VERY interested in moving cars when we go for a walk, so a retractable leash is not for me. Momma says she doesn't like them because she doesn't have control of Daphne when she's on it. Problem is, so many places you can only buy a 5 or 6 foot regular leash.

T did break one and that was the last one we used. For something so small, he is a puller. No control with the retractable. Glad my little Deucey is okay. ETB and everyone would have been so sad. Deucey---Don't be so nosy. Nothing good comes from it.

Wow, after losing Bristol (my daughter's GSP) last fall when she decided to take off on a sniff, I shudder to think of anyone losing their baby in the road. Throughout my many years of having dogs, I have only used 6 ft. leather leashes. They don't slip in my hand, they don't break, you are in control, not the dog and they come in handy if somebody needs a swat. Glad the boy is OK.

That had to be scary! Loki went after a school bus one time. Walking three dogs is hard no matter what kind of leash you use. We are always a tangled mess with everybody going different directions. I'm so glad to hear Deuce is okay!

Oh my gosh, Kris! I am sooo sorry that happened!! I would have freaked out too. We don't use those retractable leashes either. Not enough control with my crazy dogs! I'm so glad Deuce and everyone else was okay.

Oh my Deuce! I like to chase cars, too, and my mom makes us sit and stay whenever one approaches. We aren't allowed to use retractable leashes unless we are going in the river. We are too "spazzy" and mom says she doesn't trust them nor have any control over us. She doesn't have much to begin with. Thank Dog you are safe and sound. Come over and chase me in my yard if you want to chase something. ♥♥♥

Oh no! I'm glad Deuce is ok!! How scary!! I have a couple flexi leashes, but the only time they are used is like to take Mikey out in the yard to potty, or if it's raining, and I don't want to go off the porch. We use the leather leads for walkies.
